The whisky/whiskey (that's Scottish/Irish) thread

I concur with the above recommendation for bourbon. Smooth and flavorful.

also, eagle rare from buffalo trace is fairly good, too.

edit: blanton’s is also worth it as well.

What’s with this off-topic shit? This is not the bourbon/rye thread!

Anyways, I was on the Edinburgh University Water of Life Pub Crawl the night before last. I had several excellent drams over the course of the evening, but regrettably, I got too shit-faced to remember which ones they were. So I don’t really have much to report for the thread. Oh well.

What do you all recommend for people in the MD area? What high quality whiskeys can I get here? I’m tired of drinking fucking johnny walker all the time.

I’m sure there’s got to be somewhere that does high-class booze somewhere near you, but if not you can always buy on-line.

Hrm. No one has mentioned Smith’s Angaston Whisky… I think it’s aged 7 years but I likey  Then again I always like the smooth stuff.

The whisky/whiskey thats Scottish/Irish thread

Um what is the time there now?If i get time ill play, but i will need to be carefull as i have played too much this week.We talking BF2 or PR?

Can someone recommend an awesome whiskey with a really thick flavor? Like a whiskey comparable to something like an amber ale or Guiness or something. Like I want the flavor to kick me in the mouth.

I had Gold Label in a glass with two ice cubes. After a few sips all I could taste was alcohol. It went down smooth but… it tasted like vodka with a tiny bit of oak flavor in it. Long story short, I was not a happy camper.

Are you talking Scotch still?

Highlands or do you like the peaty stuff?

The Macallan is a good overall highland if you’re into single malts.

I don’t know shit about whiskey. All I want is flavorzorzorz. Not some bland oak and alcohol tasting crap.

Just gimmie some names and I’ll try what I can find.

Laphroig.

^^^^^^^

Definitely has a lot of taste.

oban.

Laphroaig definitely has a lot of flavour. It might be a good idea to find somewhere you can try a glass before you invest in a bottle, though; it’s very particular and does not float everybody’s boat. (I will confess: Though I am glad I have tried it, I am also glad I did so in a restaurant rather than buying a whole bottle.)

I’m not sure why, but this thread restores my faith in humanity.

Also, Laphroig is bottled awesomeness.

Squerlli,

Der and Petter are referring to one of the good lowland or Islay Scotch whiskeys. The smoking of peat gives it a distinctive taste. Either you like it or you don’t. Many don’t, so consider Petter’s advice.

Other good Islays are:

Lagavulin (the 16 is pricy but one of the best)
Caol Ila
Bruichladdich
Bowmore

Highlands:

Oban is good, especially the 14.
The Macallan is one of my favorite 12s.
The Macallan 15 is heavy on the bourbon taste.
Glenmorangie 12 portwood finish.
Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban is very good.
Glenmorangie The Nectar D’or (pricey but very good)
Glenfiddich 15
Glenfiddich Solera Reserve 15 (very good)
Aberlour 12
The Glenlivet Nadurra is a 16 and natural cask strength.
The Dalmore 12
Highland Park (ok)
The Singleton (ok)

All above are single malts. This means they all came from the original cask. No blending of different casks/years.

Now if you want a domestic whiskey:

Elijah Craig 18. You cannot beat this smooth tasting bourbon for the money. It costs about what the lower of the above does.

Bernheim is a wheat whiskey and has a heavy taste.

There you go. You have names.

These are not hammer to get drunk selections. You wanted taste, so the above are listed from among the collection of empty bottles that reminds me of where I should have saved towards my retirement and just drank Knob Creek (a good small batch 9 bourbon)

Stop educating him.

I just want to laugh when he tastes it for the first time.

I know and almost + repped you for your evilness.

You left out the Ardbeg 10, the only Scotch that I had to drink in lieu of using for bug spray and being considered an “alcohol abuser”.

Seriously Squerlli,

Be a man and go for a bottle of the 10 year Ardbeg. Give us your thoughts.

Hungryjoe is now my new favorite poster.

I’m going to rep you every fucking time you post.

Single malts can come from multiple casks and have their age labelled according to the youngest whisky in the mix. The rule is that they all have to come from the same distillery and there can’t be any grain alcohol in there.

Laphroig 15 is possibly my favourite whisky out there, the quarter cask is good as well. When doing tastings for noobs though, it’s usually a good idea to leave the Lephroaig until last, as (a) it helps to work up from a lighter whisky, and (b) you’re not going to be able to taste anything properly for a while after.

Looking back on my notes, the last time we had Lephroig was at Christmas, and the tasting went in this order:

 1. A hot toddy
 2. Dalwhinnie 15
 3. Macallan cask strength
 4. Bowmore Enigma 12
 5. Laphroaig quarter cask

Now ye maiden’s pathetic
With lovers athletic
For liquid cosmetic
Ya can’t beat the drop
With a glow to your cheek
It’ll make your heart leap
It would whighten a stallion
Or cure and old cob
From the mouth do a drool
Be reduced to a fool
It’d kick up your heels
And you’d peel to the buff
And as you’d be athletic
While he’d be pathetic
If only you’d take
A few drops of the stuff

So stick to the Craythur
The best thing in nature
For sinkin’ your sorrows
And raisin’ your…joys
Oh they’res nothin’ like whiskey
To make maidens frisky
It soon separates
All…the men from the boys…
