Just reading that killed every tastebud in my mouth.

Been drinking Buffalo Trace all day (work from home days are great). I may be addicted to alcohol, but I swear it doesn’t effect my coding skillz. If I can still perform my primary function does that mean I’m not really an alcoholic. (I don’t hit my wimminz either.)
Its older, more expensive brother is well worth the money, but definitely not the everyday, after work drink. Other wise, for 30$ or so I agree with macallan 12 as a good choice.
in our sociocide thread on it we had some good suggestions, but I still enjoy glenrothe’s 12 and 16 year. The 16 has a very complex, airy flavor, somewhat stronger, more complex character than the 12, but both are fine whiskeys and are cheap enough to afford to eat a steak with. apparently, they whore out their whiskey to manufactures of blends, which seems a shame to me as I like their stand alone products just fine.

I’ll update this soon with like ten or so reviews, but I’ll put a little blurb for some other whiskeys.
Japanese whiskeys are surprisingly good as well. Suntory (a massive drink manufacturer) has a product called white river for just over 100$ which is fairly smooth and enjoyable, but a bit pricey for just 750mL. They also massively market Suntory: The Old which is not too bad, smooth, but lacks some complexity. Its pretty ordinary, but for 1300 yen its light on the wallet. Nikka also has a 12 year which is 2900 yen that is all right, better than the old, but way below white river in comparison.
people say much about lagavulin 16, but mine smells and tastes exactly like formaldehyde. I’m willing to believe that i got a bad bottle, but i’ll not risk dropping the money to find out. I’m seriously considering running a Tollen’s test on it. Can some of you guys clarify experience?
more to come…
i’m going to liquor store right now…
Sipping a Lagavulin 16 year old right now.
fixed.
edit: oh and i don’t know what kind of crack i’ve been smoking (probably hippie crack) but black label is much cheaper than i thought. i must have been looking at blue or gold label. i could have bought a 26 of black today, but i cheaped out once again and got red. i’d like to try green label sometime, but i won’t be paying for it.

A Odyssey of Whiskey - Sociocide
beats the shit out of my thread. go read!
So today, among other things, I tried:
Yamazaki 25 year old, (very good, reminded me of toffee apples.)
Hibiki 17 (good drinking whisky)
Hakushu 12 (meh)
Highland park 1991 (pretty good, but if you know HP, you won’t be surprised)
Edinburgh festival blend, by Spring bank. (Suprizingly good for something I reckon they threw together as quickly as possible to cash in on the festival.)
Longbow CV. (niiice)
Balblair 1989
Balblair 1979
An Cnoc 16 (better than the 1989)
Tomintoul 27 (kind of like lemonade)
Old Ballantruan (Peated Tomintoul) (Like eating raw grain after it’s just been peated)
Ardmore Traditional
Ardmore 25 (Only for sale in America, $500 a bottle.)
Benromach Origins (I’d never heard of this stuff before. It’s fantastic. Buy it now.)
Benromach Marsala (smells of tobacco, in a bad way)
Compass Box Hedonism. (Grainy)
Compass Box Oak Cross. (Oaky, what a suprize.)
Cooley Conemara (some peat on aftertaste, but otherwise bland)
Cooley Cask Strenght (see above)
Kilbeggan 15 (see above)
Actually lots more, but my ability to type is not as good as usual, so I think I’ll leave it at that.
Lagavulin 16 is the shit #1. In a snifter, with a drop of water. Brings out the aroma. If you are gonna chase it, get a beer in a can called Old Chub from Oskar Blues. It has a tiny smoked malt content that comes out perfectly after a sip of single malt.
Jack Daniels + Dr. Pepper = me carrying my drunk friend home while she beats me with an empty water bottle. FROM MANHATTAN TO LOWER BROOKLYN!
how many miles? i’ve walked dozens while fucked up, it’s my favorite past-time.
Although I’m trying to drink my way through all of the fine Scotch distilleries, The Macallan is still one of my overall favorites.
Highly recommended - jdinca would not steer you wrong on whisky/whiskey
The 18 year old Macallan (12, 18, and 25 y/o are still aged in Sherry barrels = true awesome) is one of the smoothest most delicious Scotches in the world. The 12 is good, but you can do better for the price. The 15 is aged in Bourbon Barrels and hence I refuse to try it. Well, that and the fact that nobody has ever offered me any.
I’m telling you guys, Benromach’s new Origins is one to watch. It’s made from barley grown at Drumin Farm in Glenlivet, which was awarded top honors at a National Malting Barley Competition in 1999!
Very cakey.
If this hasn’t been said, it must be-
If it’s not scottish, it’s crap.
The good people at Yamazaki might have a thing or two to say about that.
Oh yea? We’ll see about that. I’ll judo throw them into a vat of whiskey and ferment their rotting corpses into a delicious hybred brew. Then, I intend to let it age for 25 years when I will serve it to their surviving children.
Honestly, I don’t know or care anything about good whiskey- and I’m scottish. When I drink, I drink to get drunk. I’m just gonna back away slowly from this thread and let all of you ‘high-class’ drinkers have at it.
Good day, sir.
What the fuck? Aren’t you even going to distill it? You clearly no nothing about whisky.
But wait, there’s more…
Why don’t you just stick to necking Bucky in the car park outside Tesco’s, ya bam. I’ll be ensconced in the drawing room, wearing a monocle, with a nice Tobermory 32 year old, wondering aloud “what is to be done with the youth of today.”
Currently being served at my home: Single Malt - Ladyburn, a decent lowland. Blend - the ever present Famous Grouse. Lives somewhere between Red and Black with a hint of Chivas. Very drinkable with an aggressive price point here in the states. Single Malts served neat. Blends with rocks.
DEATH TO THE PRETENDER !!!
