I was doing some research on some old north european religions and it mentioned Stav, which is sort of a fighting style and how the word staff came to be. Anyone have further links or information on the art?
There’s a Norweigian fellow named Ivar Hafskold (sp?) who founded a Stav association. Some say he’s the real deal, some say he’s bullshido. Do a google search. You’re likely to find info on him and his organization.
DeadMoon I hope your not into the Asatru religion stuff. Alot of is made up. It has been extinct for some time.
Alothough the very few respectible Astru religions are from Scandinavia and a few other Northern European countries. Others one has to be be aware of.
Someone’s channelling Angry Spastic. Soon, you will be posting about headbutts, Deadmoon.
JKDChick, to really bring him back to life, you have to say all the key words 5 times, kinda like the candyman:

NNNNNNNOOOOOOOOO!!!
I would expect one of the witch’s truthsayers to know better than to be fooled by so simple a deception as “Stav”.
Here you go, the principles of STAV.
Get stick.
Hit opponent in head.
Pilage village, rape horses, ride off on the women.
Fondle goats on way out.
It was a good day.
BHawwwhaaaaaa! Too funny!
I have a friend who practices Stav. He has fun, but they don’t spar. Its basically forms and technique only, kinda like Iaido.
I am CERTAIN that REAL VIKINGS would be bored shitless by the lack of aliveness in the training.
Real Vikings do drugs and then kill stuff.
Awesome.

Yep. Psychedelic mushrooms were one of their favorites. Some would get wasted enough to think/hallucinate that they turned into bears on the battlefield. This is where we get the word “beserker” from “ber sark”, meaning “bear shirt” - they wore bearskins into battle.
Hmm. Doing forms practice in the park
or
eating magic mushrooms, turning into a bear, and killing the shit out of eveything around…
Like I said, I think real Vikings would be bored shitless with this Stav stuff, but it will probalby be a big hit with the SCA crowd.
Umm…
Freddy:so are a lot of other religions
anyway, thanks for the imput.
As a person who has Scandinavian heritage and a lifelong interest in Nordic culture, I say Bullshido.

This post is ASTONISHINGLY precesient, under the circumstances.
Just got back to the PC since yesterday, and almost killed myself laughing seeing AS DID come back. Scary.
Umm… does anyone know if this is related to Uk Stavit?
Stavit (when they still had a website and hadn’t been run off my the MMA brigade here) claimed to be based on an ancient system and seemed to be practiced only by the bald and lardy.
Their tagline was “Stavit is what Stavit does”. As far as I could tell it made you ugly.
I dont know? I never heard of Stavit. I think they are different.
Hello,
On a seminar visit to Stockholm Sweden, I was asked by several people (independently) what was up with people/martial artists saying that they are training in the Norse arts of War! Stav…etc!
What I was told is that not one of these arts is being taught in their “supposedly” native countries!!
very interesting…
Train hard, it is the Way!
