I’ve made the decision to purchase something fun I’ve always wanted, a long slide handgun.
What I wasn’t expecting when I went shopping was huge diversity of choices other than what Colt’s traditionally offered.
If we limit things to .40 or .45 caliber, doesn’t anyone have any recommendations/warnings?
Are you planning on (or currently compete) in practical pistol comps ? Because that is the primary reason I am seeing for going to the long slide version of whatever pistol.
Other than that though, I really don’t have any experience with long verse normal slide length handguns.

Not really, I just like accuracy when I do go to the range and shoot. Not a big fan of shorter barrel handguns/pistols for the range for that reason. Part of the reason is my eye disorder (esotropia). I am nearsighted in one eye and farsighted in the other which makes targeting without a scope a real bitch (for the same reason, I have to fire rifles left handed, because my right eye is useless at range.
So naturally, I think a longslide would be a better personal choice. A lot of them are not that $$$, either, but for the right model I’d drop a little extra.
I’ve always loved the form factor of the 1911, and I was watching The Terminator earlier today and remembered how awesome the laser sighted .45 longslide looked, and then reading about the accuracy of longslides in general and it seemed right up my alley.

Every time I fall in love at first sight with a firearm that fires a caliber other than .22LR, 9mm, or 223,
and buy it, I end up rarely shooting it, because my natural sense of frugality kicks in.
In fact, I feel some frugality guilt shooting anything other than .22LR for 95% of my plinking or target practice.
Which is why I have a .22LR close equivalent of most of my favorite firearms in other calibers.
Although, I do often take one of the lever rifles, usually a very plain jane 30-30,
when I am trying to get a pig while sitting in my usual ground blind, which is usually a 100 yard or less affair
(although I am itching to take the new .44 magnum lever guide gun I just bought pig hunting, and I also have a .22LR lever gun for plinking or target practice or small game).

I only have one and it is in a .22. I do have a couple with longer barrels that I can swap out if I am going target shooting out past 25 yards.
But I always advised everyone to buy whatever gun shoots your fancy. For real! At the end of the day, I generally shoot for the fun of it and build/buy guns that I think are cool. The ballistics of longer barrels is obvious. Otherwise it’s what fits your hand best.
I’m looking forward to seeing what you get and how you like it.

I bought a CMMG conversion kit for the same reasons I listed above (for the fun of it). And use it in my ARs when I just want to plink around for almost no money. Or if I’m shooting at the river (so it’s quieter and doesn’t disturb anyone). That damn thing is fun to shoot. Basically just barely above a BB gun.

I keep telling myself the $200 is worth it. Still haven’t bought, but I really want one. Continued stories of good experience help.
I’ll be honest, .22 doesn’t “do it” for me if you know what I mean. My days of popping woodchucks are well behind me.
Now I’m turning into my father I guess, I want “boom” (his word for it) as well as accuracy. the .50 AE I posted here a few months ago definitely has “boom”, but is pretty awful in the accuracy department (as anyone who’s played Counterstrike enough knows is the damned truth, whether or not they’ve actually fired one IRL). It takes a lot of practice time to manage that beast.
Probably going to purchase this weekend…in a different state as usual. I might just go with Colt’s offerings, but glad to hear about alternatives. I don’t spend nearly as much time on seller sites as my father, and I plan to ask him too, he knows the market pretty well (i.e. he’s spending my inheritance on retirement “toys”).

The Magnum BFR 30-30 loaded with Hornady LeverRevolution rounds, will let you ding the plate beyond 100 yards, and at 100 yards with standard 30-30 rounds, if you want to go revolver.
The Magnum BFR revolvers are heavy handguns, and this helps mitigate felt recoil.
And if accuracy at maximum range for hunting is not your thing, there are many other serious calibers where revolvers are still a great way to go for maximum bang in a handgun form factor.
I’d bet money you can’t shoot a pistol well enough for there to be any measurable accuracy for you due to increased slide length. That’s not a stab at you. That’s true for the vast majority of people. A good shooter can shoot lights out with a tiny pocket pistol. Most humans are more likely to hit their target with a rock than with a pistol.

Long slides look fucking cool, though.
I agree, this is definitely an aesthetic choice if not necessarily a practical one (we’ll see, I have plenty of target practice but not with anything like this).
Help me pick some candidates, and you can forever bust my balls that I couldn’t have possibly have chosen correctly without your always priceless input.
When my wife asks me “WTF did you just buy???” I can tell her without lying “well, the Devil said”…she loves it when I get all cryptic and biblical.

I got mine for about that much and it came with three mags. I bought mine after shooting a friend’s. I was putting it off until then and decided, fuck it, this is too much fun to pass up.
Either go 9mm or .45. The .40 really is the worst of both worlds(typically speaking), you wind up with what is essentially a .45 on a 9mm frame.
Go big or go home. .45 ACP or (preferably) 9x19. Your wallet will thank you, later.

I agree, .40 ammo is not cheap. 9x19mm or .45 ACP.
