Whats with the history of Joe Emperado’s murder?
It tore up Kajukenbo/Kempo for years. He and his brother, Adriano, were black belts under Chow(when Parker was a green belt I understand), having followed him when he created his own school (previously having been with Mitose). Walter Godin was blamed by many for ‘letting’ Joe die in the attack. Godin wrote a book that has not been published that he said will explain all. The tradition of body guarding the top people and ‘guarding’ the doors at the start and end of Hawaiian Kempo styles comes largely from this murder.
Adriano, by the way, is not often credited for it, but he was a big influence in introducing Escrima to western martial arts.
I have a question:
Why do they call it Chinese Kempo and not Chuan Fa?

Because Gab they’re two different arts. When the term Kempo is used it usually means its gone through the evolution of Japan and then America.
American Kenpo usually means Parker influence.
Japanese Kempo usually means Shorin Ryu or something along this lineage.
Chinese Kempo is usually a failed attempt to reclaim the original “Chuan fa” flavor.
IMO Kempo is the most fucked system because they don’t know if they’re coming or going. I think that’s why a lot of Kempoist I come across are outright bitter when you talk about the history.

Pat, most of the people me and omega know that do Kempo are form the Villari “Shaolin” Kempo system, and they have a very politicaly bastardized history of the system…of course i’m talking about the west coast people

Thanks Pat for that post on the Tracy site. I just glanced through it, and will study more of it later, as I was getting way involved in the reading and since I am currently at work, that is a bad thing.

Omega, I am curious as to what specific style of Kempo that did not impress you. I’m not here to criticize, just to learn.
Before I quasi answer let me get someting straight, I actually like Kempo but I find it humerous when they get all snooty about ther history. Pat, you’re just perpetuating the attitude I’m referring to. As for the systems I don’t like, it’s all the instructor not the system.
Seriously Pat, I know Chuck personally, if you would like me to bring up the conversation to prove a point I will. He doesn’t really get to passionate about that. As for Jon, he’s a fun loving guy who also doesn’t really get all upity about these types of discussion. Now, Jon’s instructor, that’s a different story. My friend actually trains along that system, I could bring him on and you could discuss it further.

What are your feelings towards Hanshi Juchnik and his claim as the inheritor of the system? What are your feelings towards Mitose’s son and his claims. Have you studied with or talked to either of them?
I am hoping to have some time to dive into both sites this weekend and study up on them. They both looked very interesting.

Gad Omega, these guys are my heroes. I can’t imagine why I would want to offend them or get them confused with what you seem to be confused with what I was saying. I was saying that some Kempo people are defensive about their history and that is crapola. Only if they adhere to the Bodidarmar blessing Mitose who passed the holy relic of true kempo karmic truth on to Vallari, me, and Jamoke. I don’t want to offend people like Jon and Liddell.

I respect the art and also think that honest kempo people don’t have any problem with the history; they know where it came from and respect the guys like Walter Godin and Adriano Emperado and Joe Holk who were REAL martial artists.
