Are high-kicks really useful?

Awesome stuff Hannibal. Coincidentally, the guys at my _ing_un gym are all world champion NHB fighters too! and I’ve owned 'em all, so don’t tell me my _ing_un roundhouse can’t own you.

Golf clap. It only took him a week to reach same conclusion as the rest of us.

None of those are “substitutes” for high kicks in Kyokushin, as high kicks are the only blows allowed to the head…do you see what I’m getting at here? There are no other options to KTFO your opponent besides the high kick.

We keep going around in circles. Why is this so hard for you to understand. Read my earlier post. In a striking competition like Kyokushin/karate/kickboxing head kicks are applicable and are good fight enders because you don’t need to worry about grappling.

Fighting a grappler : No way, too easy to get taken down. All your opponant has to do is clinch you, then lift and drop you hard.

In a self defense situation: No way. Again, head kicks leave you off balanced and I don’t have the flexibility to kick someone head high without warming up.

I realize alot of people here like absolutes on everything but there is no cut and dry answer. This thread is about the discussion of high kicks and if they are useful. They can be useful. I’ve said that all along. I just don’t like assing around with them because other things work better.

Well ya know, if someone throws a jab you can kick them in the leg when they plant, potentially downining them with a leg kick, so jabs are a bad idea. If someone throws a cross you can slip and come under with a hook to the liver, thus KOing them, so the cross is bad too. If someone tries a takedown, you can sprawl and spin to their back and lock in an RNC, so going for the takedown is bad too.

If I ever meet up with Hannibal I’m going to kick him in the head.

Anytime.

My advice is to block it or get out of the way.

I’m only thinking of your welfare.

He’s got the high kick all figured out. Good luck trying to land one on him. You’ll need it.

Where are you exactly ? In America or Canada ?

I live in Sydney, Australia. But if I’m in your neck of the woods I’ll look you up. Well slap on the gloves and do a few rounds no problem. If you can land a head kick on me, brother you go for it.

Everyone thinks they have the head kicks figured out.

Gresham Oregon. Team Quest.

Perhaps you’ve heard of it.

‘Team’ what?

Is that a Van Damme film?

Were you in a Van Damme film?

Cool. You rock.

No, but I’m gonna do some Van Dammage.

Lame.

You must not be well.

Get a similarly sized friend to lie down and measure the streach needed for a head kick by puting one foot a little above their chin and the other at their feet. Most people find that easy. Its a matter of increaseing balance, technique and strength, not flexibility for most people.

That middle eastern kid’s shirt is dead sexy.

if you’re throwing high kicks at a grappler, use your chi energy to project a force field that prevents the shoot. works every time.

True story:

Random Student: “What’s the best way to kick someone in the head?”
Sifu: “We don’t really kick above the waist in tai chi.”
Random Student: “But what if you really want to kick them in the head?”
Sifu: “Throw them on the ground really hard. Then you can kick them wherever you want.”
