Are high-kicks really useful?

Kat you could wear that belt with your Gi when you go to the mall, Is that black belt?

Jeff

Last night. Sportfight. beautiful first round knockout. down goes 250# grapplemaster.

What? HIGH KICK???

a few people can get away with it, the ones who are really flexable without even streching out.

flexibility helps, but you don’t need to be all THAT flexible to land a head kick.

Those little leg flexing machines say I have about 90% of flexibility, which is pretty sorry, but I can kick a muh fucka in the head.

Wow, your form is almost exactly the same in both pics.

The product of practice?

Nice, anyways.

Hey that shit works, who knew?

Possibly. Not saying that your wrong but in my exoperiane kicking a grappler is a great way to get taken down. No matter how you try to disguise it.

My instructor fought last night as well.

His plan was to win by knockout via drop kick to the chest. (I shit you not)

His plan was foiled however and after ending up in guard he instead won by tapout via triangle.

Winning via submission is great and all but wouldn’t people rather see a knockout from a flying technique?

The answer is of course yes.

Your arguments are so quaint.

I’m sure there are many people who train for just striking or just grappling but the world has changed since UFC1.

Try to keep up, mmmkay?

We’re talking about real life and death encounters here, not your silly little sports

On the street it would have been a fatality.

Does that satisfy you, you sicko?

You mean that people finally understand how a grappler can easily take a striker out of his element ?

Or how the only way a striker can avoid getting thrown/taken down is by being equally well trained in take down defenses…hang on, that means grappling.

My, times have changed.

Some people actually crosstrain now, as strange as that may seem.

In just a few short years, fossils like yourself may even stop dwelling on striking VS grappling comparisons and realize that both are essential and not to be neglected if a person is to consider himself a complete fighter.

Awwww, it’s so cute when you try to act like your enlightened.

Seriously. I never discounted striking or said that high kicks do not work. High kicks can work. My point is there other techniques which can work better and deserve more attention. That what I’ve been trying to say all along.

You are my new special friend.

As one who supposedly practices Kyokushin, tell me, what is an appropriate substitute for the high kick in your art?

Punches, low kicks, elbows and knees.

Look, if your fighting in a striking ruleset like a kickboxing or karate tournament then yes. High kicks are fine, they can end a fight quickly and because it’s striking only you don’t have to worry about someone throwing you.

But if your up against a grappler, then no. The last thing you want to be doing is kicking to the head. This thread is all about if high kicks are useful. My responce is they can be. But other things like throws or takedowns are more effective and do not leave one in a dangerous position.

Note: Whenever anyone trys to throw high kicks at me in Kyokushin, its my opportunity. I charge in, grab their gi with one hand, grab the supporting leg with the other and tackle them towards the ground just for fun. And the guys I spar with are Kyokushin blackbelts have fought in Nationals and World Titles so don’t even think of telling me its not possible.

I don’t believe a word Hannibal says.
