Wing Tsun and Muay Thai

I have a friend that learned real Muay Thai, not Thai boxing, but Muay Thai. He doesn’t remember everything, but remembers a good deal of it. I have many years in Wing Chun, and was wondering opinions here if you think Muay Thai would enhance my stand up or conflict with my Wing Chun training. My friend thinks it’ll make my Wing Chun meaner.

Please read the rules of each sub-forum before you post your drivel.

Read the stickies before posting in a forum, each forum has its own specific criteria for posting. Just because you are new does not mean you can do whatever you want.

As for your post, how long did your friend do muay thai? What was his rank? Who taught him? What do you believe the difference is between muay thai and thai boxing?

Also, what do you want to get out of training? If you are serious about learning the art you may want to find a muay thai school with proper equipment and instruction. If you just want to have some fun and get some exercise there’s nothing wrong with training with your friend.

I haven’t traing MT or Chun but I’ve learned a lot about both arts here. IMO I would think you will find it hard to use your chun against a moderately skilled MT fighter. As for combining the two to create a super style? I think you’ll have to throw a lot of the chun out when fighting someone skilled who is not also using it.

err pretty sure the literal translation of muay thai is thai boxing.

and tbh i think the only people who would talk about thai boxing not being the “real” muay thai are the kind of people who do some soft non ring elephant riding thing, am i right? lots of flying spinning elbows?

Muay Thai will conflict with your Wing Chun training…a lot.

I’m not sure where I’m violating any rules. Unless I’m missing a sticky, I apologize. I got an inbox stating thread count violation? Do I have to have a higher thread post to post here?
As far as differences between Muay Thai and Thai Boxing, as far as I understand, Thai Boxing is where they mixed western boxing with Muay Thai, cause traditional Muay Thai hands may have some holes in their gaurd with western kickboxing ruleset.
I do not know who taught him, just know he’s spent years training it, and can hit like a truck. Even my Wing Chun instructor says he’s never seen anyone that could hit as hard. But anyway, he learned traditional Muay Thai. I’ve sparred with him, my instructor sparred with him, neither one of us will question his Muay Thai.

Yes, you missed a sticky. This is the advanced striking forum. There is nothing advanced or technical about asking if one art will conflict with another art.
Here are the rules.

read that, but missed about it being only for training related discussions regarding competition arts. sorry about that. delete away

No offense, but WC is not known for it’s powerful punches so to most chunners even an amateur muay thai practitioner might hit like a truck, this isn’t evidence of the MY guys credentials. Being a WC practitioner does not make you a qualified judge of MT ability, all it makes you a good judge of that the guy can use what he knows effectively against you. If he considers muay thai and thai boxing different arts he may not be as informed as he thinks he is. Still, if you think you can learn from the guy train with him. But if you’re serious about learning MT find a school.

The OP might mix up Muay Thai and Muay Boran.

I could beat him cause I know kung fu. Not Chinese boxing, but kung fu.

I have a friend who got tied up and robbed by a kathooey. Not one of those hollywood kathooey, but a real kathooey. He doesn’t remember much of it, but it was the real deal. I have many years in not being choked by prostitutes, which is probably what kept me from pulling a total David Carradine, and was sondering if getting choked by a kathooey would enhance my stand up game or would conflict with my personal sense of self respect.
My friend thinks it will make my getting choked by prostitutes meaner.
The OP might mix up Muay Thai and Muay Boran.
No, the OP might be a fucking idiot… because as has already been pointed out, the literal translation of Muay Thai is “Thai boxing”.

I’ve trained the real judo. Not the sport judo with the roller skates. That’s what I’d tell my friend if I had one.
the sport judo with the roller skates.
I’m imagining something like roller derby with judogis

Nope got it wrong again. You can ask technique and training questions for any art here. ADVANCED questions. If you don’t know if your question is advanced ask in the BASIC technique forum. Is “teh real” Muay Thai gonna conflict with my Wing Chun is not an advanced question by any means at all.

It’s clear that OP is an idiot, words _ing _un in that context already gave that away. But still might be talking about Muay Boran.

Friend says it was Muay Boran he learned, not Muay Thai. Could be interesting to learn. Does anyone here know any differences in technique between the two?

Yeah, certainly.

The difference is muay thai works, while muay boran is a scam perpetuated and practised by people who couldn’t hack it in the real thing.

well, at age 50, I’ve seen him punch a 100 pound punching bag, hard enough to make the ends meet. So he can hit hard. I would imagine someone passed something worthwhile down to him. But that could just because he understand body mechanics so well. Or being a large guy that is also fast.
