What is it to be Male?
How did you come to this conclusion?

Hell they throw parades and rallies like they’re politicians over here and a lot of people really don’t care. If you’re talking about the opinions of ANYbody you have to think about people that are afraid to speak up for whatever reason, women, anybody. The OP asked for what you would tell your 13 year old son, it didn’t say you had to be a man or straight to answer.

Keywords ‘notions of femininity’ and ‘perceived homosexual traits’.

I support gays. More girl lovin’ for me!

Well, I support gay men and I support women who are bi/bi curious/lesbian exhibitionists, etc. Butch Betties - I’ll pass, thanks.
There’s a fundamental philosophical problem there though Hedge. If you believe concepts of masculinity are transient and change over time. Then you have to accept that in certain time periods there are singular conceptualisations of masculinity, these may not be immutable in the long term, but are definitive in their epoch.

The current epoch does not define masculinity as the Greeks did, nor does it definite as 17th century samurai did.

The current definition of masculinity is what the majority of people have outlined in this thread. A definition that currently rejects notions of femininity and disassociates itself from perceived homosexual traits.

Masculinity is defined in our epoch by self-reliance, anti-femininity and general lad culture.

If you’re going to buy into cultural relativism, you can’t complain when the relativism of the culture epoch you currently inhabit isn’t one you like.
Sure, you may be right, but if you are, you’re missing the point of the thread, unless you’re trying to engage in a kind of cultural anthropology of bros (which, please catch no feelings offa this, but I don’t think you’ve got the distance from to be objective about) and not what Phrost was asking about at all.

In fact you’re supporting my point: try to be masculine if you want. It’s constantly changing and completely culturally relative, but plenty have got strange pasttimes. But don’t go pretending you’re getting in touch with the primal archetype of the masculine power that civilization and shaving and bathing is trying to tame and whatever Joseph Campbell was on about all the time.

And don’t be a dick or look down your noses at people who don’t fit your interpretation of manliness, a frequent pasttime of some “real men”.

And Devil pops in for his daily reminder that he’s heterosexual. You know, in case we forget, like that one time.

You can reject it as normatively valid, in the knowledge that some parts of the past and future will probably agree with you.

P.S. Re Christian anti-gays. All I said was that it started being illegal. I don’t know where you got that I therefore thought it must have been a a constant, screaming orgy of destruction. Can we agree that “not illegal” to “illegal but spottily enforced” or “illegal but often turned a blind eye to” is an increase in the amount of persecution? Being burned at the stake at a low probability is a bit worse than Aristophanes consistently taking the piss, yes?

Fugazi is gay.

Unlike you, and the rest of the boys from the bushes down at Malcom X Park, right?

Ha! You can’t fool me! I’ll never click on a link you post and subject my manly and righteous PC to your computer AIDS sites.

Being male means you create and destroy with your hands instead of your vagina.

The important bits here are from 0:27 to 0:44. That’s the best clip I could find of it, but it sums it all right up, right there.

Now go out, and make that bitch happy.

So because you included those “keywords” that means?
Being male means you create and destroy with your hands instead of your vagina.
I would say you went over the top, but under the bottom probably would be a better term.

And from way out in left field…

I’ll throw some rain on the topic of Greeks, I am a half Greek-Irishman, with family in main-land Greece, and primary family I visit yearly in Corfu, Greece. I have a grandfather who runs a travel agency/brothel/whorehouse.

Part of the reason why the homosexual community in Greece, and it’s origins became the way they were today, was because the Greek orthodox of Catholicism is so strong within the culture, that to this day the ethics of the old time are still practiced in modern time so much to the point.
That even the families shun or the youth is scared to death of the repercussions of their actions. You may ask, why do they give a shit? If a man or women goes off and has sex without the blessing of their families, they are more than likely to not gain acceptance in the community, and lose the relationship with their families, forever. It has changed since, however the women still openly practice this ‘celibacy’ which often drives the Greek men crazy and begin to lean toward the other side of the playing field.

How do the Greek men, and scandalous women perform intercourse?

A big example i face whenever I visit, and tip to whoever visit Greece: a real Greek women will not openly sleep with you, maybe a transplant greek(Greeks from other islands/mainland), or people claiming to be greek(tan skin, dark hair wannabe foreigners that move there), instead she will take time to get to know you, most of the time, and only that. A talking basis. however if you do manage to bed her. Chances are religion is so deep within the family that even hanging out with anyone who isn’t completely Greek or gained the blessing of the family makes the women there scared shitless. As a result in the likes of intercourse they will not let you hit the ‘pink’, in other words they are too scared they will deceive there family so to compensate they only take it in the butt till they are married. This type of thinking gives the Greek men sexual frustration, and thus why you have so many homosexuals in Greece. The switch would not be hard for them.

However even though the spirit of masculinity is still there, you will not be surprised to find that the male body there does not find it odd to share water bottles, towels, etc. during training, or working out. I asked this once. I was told like this “We are all athletes for the same country”. I didn’t say anything, it struck me so odd I just went back to my weight bench.

For the inept thinker. Greek women = buttsecks only.

This thread has been pussified. Dude, what fuck, man?

Fuck that philosophy shit.
Who gives a fuck what Esquire or anybody else has to say about being a man? Motherfuckers ain’t out here on these streets trying to make a dollar from two motherfucking pennies. Motherfuckers ain’t living this harsh realities and shit.

Real men do shit that needs to get done, and then shut the fuck up about it.

Real men wake up in the morning and say ‘I don’t know if today I will have to kill a motherfucker or save a motherfucker’s life, but I will do whichever is necessary’.

Because that’s what realness is. Keep that shit real man.

And occasionally real men watch anime. Because real men love that shit. I also watch hentai, because I also love that shit. Real men are allowed to watch anime and hentai, even at the same time.

Real shit.

I was in agreement with everything till this. Not to bust balls, but I bet watching anime put a damper on your goal to become “Jason Bourne” at the age of 27.

So watching anime makes me more masculine? Fuck me I’ve been doing it all wrong.

Actually, it has not. Anime has bolstered my resolve to become Jason Bourne by age 28. Because anime is filled with hot headed motherfuckers who train hard specifically so they can back their talk up with real shit. Which, incidentally is also shit that real men should do.

Dude, Sailor Moon? Really? Sailor fucking moon? That’s like me picking the movie 27 Dresses or some other pathetic piece of tripe Starring Katherine Heigl to represent all of cinema.

Sailor what? I google’d the words ‘anime masculine’ and chose the girliest photo. Im not surprised you would knew what that was anyways. As you can tell I was never completely into anime, if you are counting adult swim.

I have to strongly disagree, saying that cartoons filled with exaggerated fantasies adored by people who are considered dedicated fighters, or real masculine men, is similar to saying wing chun works. It’s a fantasy most wish believe we’re true.

This type of thinking is weak minded above a certain age. I can see how it hinders one’s life.

That’s nothing.

(I’m not gonna tell him that most of the manly dudes in anime are exaggerated homosexual caricatures)
