TKD kid's instructor killed in barfight with 3 men.

You fail in creating a thread.

No thread should be started with just a link as the post. Write something original.

Will you be fixing this on your own or do you need further [strike]abuse[/strike] encouragement to fix it?

I guess he wasn’t using the nunchaku he’s holding in the picture when he was killed…

I feel sad for his family and friends.

R.I.P. TKD kid

Bad Credit gave us the intro on another thread…http://www.bullshido.net/forums/showthread.php?t=68373&p=1773337#post1773337, (that sticky on how to quote lied to me!)

Does he still fail? Is there a grading panel? Must train harder…

I really feel for the TKD guy, invincible one minute - vincible the next. Very vincible.

Ok, here’s the deal. I’m not sure what to say. So I’m going to say it all. The guy who died was a student of a local TKD place that’s sort of a mcdojang. They have kiddy BB’s. Here’s their website; http://www.jaehosim.com/ Now, in their defense, I should point out that the owner and head teacher, Sim, has struggled to keep a Judo program there. A Judo BB who travelled through the area and talked to us at the class I go to said that he visited and Sim explained that he does the kid’s TKD for money, but really wished he could do more Judo, and offered the BB a job as an instructor. The BB couldn’t stay in the area, though, if I remember right. I don’t know the status of the Judo class there right now. The schedule says there is one, but I have no idea who’s teaching.

Sim allowed a local cagefighter with a good record who’s a champ wrestler teach a MMA class there at night. The MMA guy is teaching out of books, and is in no way certified to teach as far as I know, but he has a damn good record and has a really good wrestling base. I’m not sure, but his class may no longer be there. I believe this is his myspace; http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=53270789 (Damn, his record’s better than I thought. I remember one of my Judo classmates being invited to check out his MMA class, might have to do that myself and review it.)

I’m not 100% on this, but I’ve been told that Sim had a student or two compete at the local cage. I think it was this Matt Begtrup guy who died who competed. I never saw him fight, but was told he didn’t do well. I remember a guy from Sim’s school getting into the Cage midcard to do a nunchuck demo one time I was there. Looking at Sim’s BB page, I’m pretty sure it was Begtrup. He screwed up the demo and dropped one of his chuk’s, and then had to have somebody come into the cage to put his shoulder back into place, which is why he supposedly dropped it to begin with. Those of us watching think it was just an excuse for screwing up. Nobody booed, which surprised me, but looking around I could see all the MMA fans and drunks were completely unimpressed by the demo.

My thoughts on this all; Sim runs a mcdojang, but is trying hard to branch out. Kudos to him for this. He sounds like a lot of other people on here who have said that they had to have kiddy TKD to make money to keep the place open so they could have a MMA class at night.

One of his star students died in a barfight at a strip club against 3 guys. Here’s the strip club’s website; http://www.stripclubnetwork.com/zippersclub/parties.html He didn’t say how he felt about where the guy died. I wonder if barfighting or going to strip clubs goes against the morals taught at that school. To be fair, the guy might not have started it.

Am I surprised a kiddy TKD teacher died in a streetfight against multiple opponents? No. Would I have done any better? That’s the question. The news isn’t giving any details. We don’t know if it went to the ground, or if weapons were involved, or if the attackers were all on him at once, or how big they were. We don’t know what started it. Would more grappling training helped? Maybe to get up, but then he could’ve just been taken down again by one of the other guys to get GNP’ed by the other two. Would weapons have helped? Did he have range or time to get one out? Times like this I remember Alex Gong, the MT champ and teacher who got shot to death.

I can say that I’m physically much larger than the guy who died, but my cardio sucks, and I doubt I would have done well against three opponents my size or bigger. I wonder how drunk everyone was, the news doesn’t say. I can say that one man is dead, three are charged with his murder and in jail, and two businesses and countless families are suffering now. This whole thing inspires me to stay away from violence, and to get in better shape and skill just in case. Not to compete again, but to survive in the future. My heart goes out to everyone involved in this mess. I wish there was something I could do.

Well that makes up for the lack of intro in the first post.

Unless they release any more details about what happened it’s hard to speculate how the fight went.

All we know is he was out-numbered and may (very likely) have been drinking. And from the end result he oviously got a serious kicking.

Not a situation I would want to try my luck in.

bc, you should recheck some of your sources. But I don’t want to derail the thread to nitpick.

Last night, there was a brief, well, memorial for lack of better term, for Matt at The Cage, Inc., show. It was one of the bigger shows in recent times (probably bigger than either show Matt was seen at), and there was a raffle for tickets - Sims and Matt family is starting a scholarship fund for training in Korea.

The promoter of the fights kicked in a pretty good donation.

As for Matt’s fight, I wrote a bit about it in a longer, somewhat rambling post (http://www.bullshido.net/forums/showpost.php?p=730419&postcount=9); the important part:

The promoter (www.thecageinc.com) is holding a tournament to determine the lightweight champion (belt and $500 prize money). J.'s lightweight (about 150). Didn’t get home until about 2:00 a.m., woke up at my usual 7:00.

Short story of the fight is that J. advanced to the semi-finals on Oct. 22.

Long story - 12 men entered the tournament. First round was six fights. J. pulled some one without any MMA experience. His guy came out swinging, tried a couple side kicks (apparently had some TKD). A brief flurry, J. gets his guy on the ground, starting to work a front guillotine.

But, I can see from my cornerman spot, his guy is running pretty good from the nose. Ref breaks them, they spend a few minutes and can’t get the bleeding to stop, match is called, J. wins.

(I only found this thread 'cause I was looking for a link to send to John). Perhaps Matt didn’t do that well, but John was 2-0 MMA at the time and 5-4 (IIRC) for boxing, and even after the broken nose Matt was game to continue.

There some rumors in the air last night, about how things went down, but at this point, well, still mostly rumors.

Thanks for the reply, dakota. If any of my facts are wrong, please post the proper info here and I’ll just delete the parts of mine that are wrong. I said in my post that I wasn’t sure on a lot of that. It’s why I didn’t want to put anything down at first. Eventually I felt I had to say something, though. Stuff like this is a wakeup call to us martial artists.

Hey,

Matt Begtrup was my son and there was no martial arts involved in his death. He was attempting to breakup a fight when he was hit from behind and went to the ground. Two guys then proceeded to kick him in the head until he wasn’t moving anymore. He was air lifted to Avera hospital where he was pronounced brain dead. Matt was an organ donor and was able to help so many upon his death. It’s very hard everyday when you know he will never come walking through the door. Peace
