[edit]Controversy
According to a forum thread, an uncredited student, Brian McLaughlin, was largely responsible for the second edition of Simco’s financially successful book, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: The Master Text.
Simco has been accused of ‘belt shopping’ (frequently changing instructors in the interests of faster promotion).
On August 21, 2008 Phil Migliarese posted to his website:
I just learned, from a highly reliable law enforcement source, some extremely disturbing news that negatively affects all of us in the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community."

Gene Simco, BJJ instructor, Owner of NYMAG Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Academy was (Aug 21, 2008) arrested today in Dutchess County, NY for the following.

  1. Endangering the welfare of a CHILD. 2) SEXUAL ABUSE in the 3rd degree involving a MINOR.

I would like to believe that none of this is true, but I happen to know that this investigating was going on for a long time.

Phil Migliarese

To date, none of this information has been confirmed and it is suspected by some that this is a smear campaign against Simco.

[edit]Lineage
Simco’s lineage continues to be a matter of debate, particularly on the JiuJitsuGear website. According to Michael Jen (posting as Bolo), Simco’s early training was under numerous instructors, eventually getting his blue belt after a private lesson with Joe Moreira. Jen goes on to state that Simco’s purple came from Marcio Simas, after Simco competed at purple belt level. He has been promoted and then demoted from brown belt at least twice, first by Fernando Sarmento, then by Reylson Gracie (although according to Greg Davis, posting as TheTrain, Reylson has denied any involvement with Simco). Simco received promotion to brown belt - for the third time - by Michael Jen, eventually getting his black belt from yet another instructor, Macelo “Nigue” Sandes. Greg Davis claims that shortly before this, Simco had been training with Marco Alvan, but switched to Nigue because Alvan told Simco he was “not even ready for a stripe on his brown”.
