Sumo boss may dodge indecent assault charges
Former yokozuna Kitanoumi, who heads the Japan Sumo Association, is likely to be cleared of the allegations that he sexually assaulted and hit a woman, inflicting bodily injury, law enforcers said Thursday.
Tokyo police sent an investigation document to prosecutors on Kitanoumi, 51, on Thursday, stating that it is highly unlikely that he committed the crime.
The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) took the action in response to a criminal complaint filed by a 29-year-old bar employee accusing the former sumo wrestler of hitting and sexually assaulting her.
The woman claims that Kitanoumi hit her on the head at a bar in the capital’s Sumida-ku on Oct. 25, last year, slightly injuring her. The MPD investigated the allegations but could not confirm that he assaulted her.
After the woman filed the complaint against him, Kitanoumi categorically denied at a news conference that he assaulted the bar employee. (Mainichi Shimbun, Japan, Feb. 10, 2005)
