Strikistanian's Competition Footage

Yeah, okay, wow… I can’t figure out how this stuff works. I think I’m just going to post links 'cause imbedding isn’t working for me.

Not too proud of my technique – or lack there of – in the Sanda fight. I got jitters and forgot everything I knew and just went wild. But what the hell, I’ll post it anyways.

first MMA fight 2/21/09

YouTube - AFO MMA: Kin “Kong” Moy vs Theo Desjardin

I’m the guy with black shorts.

Is it just me or are all of these vids broken?

Edit: “Kin Kong” Lol! That’s awesome.

Congrats on the MMA win. What was that guy’s background? Seemed to have some good TD’s.

It’s not just you. I couldn’t imbed them properly, so I just posted the links.

The other guy had a MAJOR background in wrestling. (We became myspace buddies afterwards, lol, so we’ve chatted about our MA experience.) He wrestled in Junior High and 3 years in HS. His record in freshman year was 16-4; his record in sophomore was 22-2, and his record in junior was 26-1.

He’d only been training for MMA for a few months, though. So I, thankfully, had an advantage standing and on the ground. I just couldn’t, for the goddamn life of me, control where the fight would take place.

And now vids from my smoker MT match.

Once again, I’m just posting the links and hoping they magically appear as imbedded videos, as my other vids did.

EDIT: I’m the short one

Smoker Muay Thai Fight Video by Kin [:heart:s Zoe!] - MySpace Video@@AMEPARAM@@http://mediaservices.myspace.com/services/media/embed.aspx/m=59659045@@AMEPARAM@@mediaservices@@AMEPARAM@@myspace@@AMEPARAM@@services/media/embed@@AMEPARAM@@aspx/m@@AMEPARAM@@59659045

Is this the smoker you described as a “disastrous showing”? Looks like you made a pretty good showing to me  Nice take downs and your boxing seemed decently effective. Was this a compromise rule set between sanda-muaythai? What were the weights? It looked like the other guy was significantly bigger.

A few things I want to throw out there:

When moving in and throwing punches, be careful not to break your posture and lean forward as you come in. The main problem we have here is that this is the primary cause of your getting pulled into clinch-knees because you’re basically putting yourself in prime position for the other guy to just put his arms on top of you and throw a knee. It’s bad to break your posture even without knees for various reasons, but it’s especially bad when clinch-knees are involved.

Now, I don’t really know much about what you’re taught in sanda as far as what to do when someone grabs you in a neck clinch since you’re allowed to reach down and grab the legs, but from a muaythai standpoint, as soon as you’re grabbed you want to get your hips deep in as close to your opponent’s hips as possible, keep your back straight and your head up before making any attempt to body clinch. If you bend over and start reaching for their hips, all they have to do is get their hips back and you’ve just put yourself in a worse position for taking some knee strikes and getting pulled around by your head. Defending the muaythai clinch is about gluing your body to theirs, particularly if you’re significantly shorter like in this fight.

Another thing, which is something I was kind of getting at with the sparring recommendation, is that you back off or move back too much, giving your opponent room to regain their composure. You want to keep constant pressure, always attempting to maneuver them in ways that either set them up for some big strike or into the corner. You don’t want your opponent to have the freedom to move around and dictate the fight, unless you’re just totally awesome at fighting off the ropes like James Tony.

In any case, it was a good fight and I thought you handled yourself well

I agree. You did pretty well. Any different thoughts after seeing it?

Nice MMA match. Good job on not losing your composure after that first big takedown. I liked how you methodically worked the body when he held you down in his guard. When he made space to alleviate the pain, you were ready and popped him in the face.

Despite the positional changes on the ground, especially toward the end of the match, you did an excellent job of staying on top.

I like that your MMA match was illuminated by chandelier. That really set the mood.

Nice fight, too. You were pretty tenacious, and worked methodically for position after every takedown.

EDIT: Beaten by a minute by jnp, and we both used the word “methodically”? That’s depressing.

Yes, this was the smoker. Upon viewing the tapes several dozen times, I realized that from an objective point of view, it was far from disasterous. I was just upset because of my lapses into haymaker-ville, my excessive crotch shots, etc. I’m still not satisfied with how it turned out, but I’m using it as motivation and as a reference for some things that I need to change.

The ruleset was just Muay Thai. If it were Sanda, I think I would’ve mixed up the takedowns a little more, and used some more painful ones. I was warned once because I did a small lift on a takedown, which I guess is illegal. But other than that, the ref didn’t say anything. I’m sure that they were being lenient though, since it was a smoker. If not, I’d have obviously gotten DQ’d for the ball shots.

We fought at 150. I barely cut any weight (3 pounds), while I suspect that he cut a more considerable amount.

Anyways, I’ve really taken your advice (from the other thread) to heart. I feel like I’ve had an epiphany about how I should approach a fight. Though I’ve only managed to get in 1 standup sparring session in this week, I worked appy as much pressure as reasonably possible. Well, except with this one guy. Pretty tall, really good counter fighter. With him I still tried to get off first, but I spent a lot more time trying to get a good angle on him, before engaging with strikes.

I’ll keep working on that.

As for the posture, that’s something that my coaches yell at me for quite frequently. I’ve gotten much better about it in sparring, but I haven’t gotten over my fear and discomfort about moving closer to the guy’s knees. Though I know that, logically, that would reduce the power… It’s just counter intuitive. Anyways, in the gym I can consciously MAKE myself do it, but I wasn’t able to in the match.

Even though I have more options in Sanda, that doesn’t excuse me for lacking one of the fundamentals of defending knees from that position. I’ll get to work on that as well.

Thanks for the feedback. It’s turned on a light bulb in my head, and I earnestly am doing my best to impliment your advice.

WW, I felt better after watching it, but my gripes remain. Albeit, the bad was less frequent in actuality, than it was in my skewed recollection of the match.

JnP, I don’t think I could’ve freaked out if I wanted to. I was so out of it when the match started. It was like “oh… I’m on the floor. I should probably get back up… Dammit, on the floor again? Seriously, I need to get this back to my feet… Ohey I’m on top now. Sweeet.”

And lol Ranger, a compliment that org always gets is that the chandelier adds a great deal of class to the events. I suppose I agree.

It’s good that you’re still not satisfied, you should never be satisfied with your performance and always be trying to improve. It’s a good attitude to have

Anyway, I look forward to seeing more of your fights and how you improve

My NAGA matches.

Match 1: It picks up midway through. I’m going to replace the video as soon as I can. The other guy took me down, but I was able to sweep him/take him down from half guard.

Match 2: My bad posture in guard only foreshadows my doom…

Match 3: Semi Finals

Match 4: I get pwnt.

YouTube - NAGA Match 4 (Final)

I was watching the guy who beat me throughout the tournament. I had a feeling he was going to do me in. My weakest place is in a good/aggressive guard player’s closed guard. I feel alright in open guards, on my back, or in bad positions, but a good guard player is the bane of my existence. I have so much trouble keeping good posture in guard, and I have decided that it is now of utmost importance to fix that problem post-haste.

anyways, I’d like honest feedback and criticism – along with any praise that is deemed appropriate.

Here’s an MMA smoker I did. The standup rules are like San Da and the ground rules were like sub grappling. There’s no ground and pound.

The smoker wasn’t run all that well and me and this guy were the only ones who were doing MMA. Everyone else was grappling, so they tried to use us to keep the audience hooked. Consequently, we fought each other twice. The first time I won by submission within 2 minutes, so this time I looked to keep the fight standing to practice my striking.

I have a ton of respect for this guy, as he just wouldn’t quit. But on the other hand, I feel kinda bad, because of how one-sided this was. He wasn’t originally supposed to be my opponent, but both of your opponents dropped out so we opted to fight each other despite a nearly 10 pound disparity in weight and a 2 fight disparity in experience. Still, he didn’t give a shit and gave it his all nonetheless.

As usual, I’m after honest feedback and criticism.

YouTube - MMA/Pancrase Smoker 7/18/09

I just wanted to elaborate on our conversation last night. I hope I didn’t leave you with the impression that I think your power is lacking. I don’t. I just finished watching the MMA smoker stuff, and its clear you have enough power to hurt the people you are competing against. What I was tryin to say is that for a fighter with your build, you should be cultivating superior power, both in your hands, and round kicks. You should be scaring people on the inside with the hook (and uppercut), and breaking them down with your round kick.

You’re moving great, and your throwing is starting to become dangerous. The thing missing is not decent power, but serious power. There is no reason why you shouldn’t be freaking people out the way Wassett does; You’re fast enough, and your putting together the right combinations. I can’t help but think there is a whole 'nother level of bad ass waiting for you when you decide to cultivate it.

You don’t get noticed that much on this site, but you are clearly starting to stand out as one of the most active and successful fighters we have here. Its obvious that you love to fight, and I just wanted to put in my $0.02 to help you get where you’re going.

Its just the opinion of an old dude who doesn’t train as much as he should, but I have watched a million fights, and watched truly great people train. Sometimes I see things.

Cheers Kin,

-M

Thanks Matt.

You’re absolutely right; I would be a much better fighter if my strikes were more powerful. My coaches and I are constantly working at it. I hit much harder than I did a year ago since my technique has improved and after the smoker this saturday, i’m going to be adding some strength training, which may help as well. I really do hope that I acquire Wasset-esque power some day. Until then, my focus is just improving in incriments and getting better at setting up the strikes that do have power (side kick, left hook).

YouTube - Kin “Kong” Moy vs Brett Morris Muay Thai Smoker 10/3/09

That’s the Muay Thai Smoker I did last night 10/3/09.

I felt like it was a very big improvement over my last one, and I’m pretty satisfied with how it went down. I also feel that, were this to be judged, I would have won for pushing the action and landing a bit more.

That said, it (of course) showed me that I still have plenty to work on. For instance, throwing some damn crosses, hesitating less, keeping my hands up, clinch work, longer/better combinations, etc. LOL one thing I’ve noticed is that I’ve fouled my opponent at least twice in all 3 kickboxing fights I’ve had. It’s becoming an unfortunate trend…

Also, because I’m used to Sanda sparring there were a couple of times where I caught a leg and was about to go for a takedown, but stopped myself mid way. I half assed a lot of throw attempts because I wasn’t sure if it would be legal or not.

Anyways honest feedback and constructive criticism is appreciated. :]

For any mods that might be interested, the sanda fight and the fight in the cage were official and went on my amateur record. The others were just smokers that dont count.

Until I manage to burn the DVD they gave me, there’s a clip of my latest victory from 1:20-125.

Edit: I also have my third fight in full now.

//youtu.be/qGi7diby07o

Wow, you are a beast. Your last fight…beautiful body kick near the start there, Strike. Good exchanges. You got caught, but were slinging heat!!! I loved that. Great footwork, and lateral movement. What a fight.

6th fight.

//youtu.be/C0Y2uwXjFBA

7th fight: No footage yet, but I went against a really solid BJJ guy who also had high school wrestling background. He took me down and despite the fact that I swept him once, stood back up multiple times, etc he kept slamming me and punching me in the face. At the end of the round, I was on my feet and tied up against the cage, and I managed to distract him with a knee and land a foot sweep. I spent the last 15 seconds pounding him, but it wasnt enough to take back the round.

In the second, I landed a head kick before getting thrown back on the mat. From my guard I got a collar tie with one hand and unleashed hard hooks with the other. He postured to retaliate and I threw up a footprints-on-ceiling triangle, which I was able to lock up. I got an underhook and he fell on his side where I trapped his arm across and rained punches until the ref stopped it. When I unlocked the triangle he slid on to the mat, unconscious.

That’ll have to do, until I get a vid – if that promotion ever follows through with their promises to have the videos.
