Spyderco Manix 2 XL, opinions please.

Spyderco Manix 2XL. Thoughts/opinions on the Manix 2XL and spyderco knives in general. Thanks.

I love Spyderco knife quality. They have been slow to adopt lefty friendly features but otherwise no complaints. If you’re looking for a knife you can quickly snap open you might be disappointed because most of their designs don’t incorporate bushings.

The Manix2XL is a big ol knife that has heft without being ridiculous. For EDC I’d probably go with something smaller unless I was specifically looking for something that can take a beating. It doesn’t come with a deep carry pocket clip so it will stick out of your pocket a bit. If you don’t go for a Sprint run made from a different steel, the standard S30V is really tough and Spyderco does their heat treat right. That said, it’s going to be harder to sharpen than a knife made of softer steel. As long as you’re cool with all that it’s a great knife, just not my thing.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question. Much appreciated. My EDC is smaller. I’m looking at the Manix 2XL for more of an all around outdoor for hiking, biking, hunting knife. I also help some friends with running bear and lion hounds and don’t always want a big fixed blade with all the other stuff. But a bigger folder that can clip in a pocket comes in handy. Thanks again.

I love Spyderco knives, however, I can attest from personal experience that the blade style of the Manix is NOT a good one for field dressing big game. I had smaller versions with similar blade design, that, while razor sharp and held edge very well, were not well suited to that sort of thing.

I just saw these and actually thought they would be ok for field dressing game:

https://www.knifecenter.com/item/SP231GP/spyderco-parata-stop-lock-folding-knife-vg-10-satin-plain-blade-black-g10-handles

VG-10 is pretty meh for edge retention though.

What I would like is for Benchmade to make a folding version of the hidden canyon hunter but so far no dice. Literally any folding knife with good steel and that exact blade profile is what I want.

I tend towards drop points, fixed blades. Easier to clean, plus don’t tend to lose as can put in sheath. That said, I’ve done plenty with a Buck 110 or Schrade equivalent.

I gutted a deer with a swiss army knife cause forgot bigger knife.

Non locking sucks, but they are sharp, lol.

I had seen those when looking to replace my lost in river Mora.

Still need to buy something.

I have several SpyderCo knives, love them all, but none of them that size.

I use a Buck 0537RWG-B Open Season Skinner Gut Hook Fixed Blade Knife, for skinning deer. I freaking love that thing. I need to buy a new sheath for it as the gut hook almost sliced through the strap when I pulled it out one time.

I’ve never owned a knife with a guthook, but, they look like they do come in handy.

This is closer to what I like. At one point I had found some expensive (of course) fixed blade knives that I fell in love with. However, at the time, my Mora, at 15 bucks, was working just fine, and I had not dropped it into deep water in the river…

Or I could go old-school…

I’d probably slice my hand at some point, though…

Then we get into the “cannot justify” range…

I’ve got a mora and so does each of my kids. I’ve abused that thing and it keeps on ticking. Pretty dang good knives.

Mora’s are gleaming knives. They’re probably one of the best value knives out there.

Yeah, LOL, I’m gonna have to order another one. The ergonomics of the handle is superb, for me at least.

They hold an edge pretty well (I got stainless one).
