Those are some weak-ass side kicks in that first movie. And the “Sparring” looked like a crazy slap-fest with weak kicks and the occasional chain-punch thrown in.
Oh woe is kung fu these days. Finding non-sucky instruction is almost impossible if you live in the wrong areas. Excuse me while I shed some tears over a tub of ice cream while watching Darma and Greg. cries
This seems to be the only praying mantis kung fu in singapore… not alive, as you can see… but the locks seem interesting, when combined with something a little more effective possibly.
By the way, might want to download from site and play in media player… quicktime sticks for me…
Are there ANY impressive praying mantis clips out there? there has to be some… also, what are all your opinions on the mantisApp4 clip, or the shoulder grab defense? viable?
That was a suckass demonstration of Seven Star…
Not to mention from Singapore which is the worst place someone could’ve picked to grab a demo of 7*…
That App contained in the second video is normally practiced in a two person drill with heavy resistance.
The only quality 7star mantis boxing I know directly is the Aussies headed up by a Brendan Tunks www.mantisboxing.com
and the Polish Mantis Boxing Society.
Both of them train hardcore in that they’ll train alive, and train to use the principals of mantis boxing in a “live” setting.
That said, if you get the leg busting traditional training of 7* mantis, you’ll have a good base to go into almost any art since they focus more on specific combat principals and applying them to a resisting partner
Oh yea, and they’re heavy heavy heavy on conditioning & cardio…
I have heard many stories about him to, my favorite is back in the day of steel wire, Tony was big into saying who was and who was not a valid Kung Fu teacher with a good lineage. So after a period of slaging off some variouse teachers, a guy called Tony Felix (who I only know in passing) turned up at Leung’s class with a crowd, blocked the doors, challanged and beat him up.
I remember Leung writing about it in his cobmat columb, but his story was differant to the story I heard and involved both guys ‘circling each other unable to get a hit in’. He added that Felix turned up on a beginners night, and it would have been differant had his black belts been there!
Then he went to china, created a back story, changed his name, ditched his art and started peddling bullshit!
Here’s one of the best mantis videos I have found. It’s pretty old and I think it’s been posted on Bullshido a few times now, but here you go: http://media.putfile.com/mantisfight
Nice, shows off some basic waist principles and Gou Rou Cai, but it’s still pretty much compliant, with a little more pressure thrown in. Wish Brendan would put up clips of his team fighting sanshou. It’s not pretty but you you get to see it work in a live setting
No gloves and no head shots. I still don’t understand how people can “spar” without actually hitting each other. Beating on the Teen Ranger at the end doesn’t count, because he didn’t hit back, at least not to the head.
