Savate vs Japanese Kickboxing (1970)

From http://www.mikemiles.com/sport/hokb/1970.cfm

"Boxe Francaise Savate vs. Japanese Kickboxing

French Savate Champion Christian Guillaume finished his 6 week visit to Japan with 5 wins in 5 fights with Japanese Kickboxers. The Savate expert proved that La Boxe Francaise-Savate is not inferior to Oriental methods. He won 3 of his bouts with KO’es and 2 of them by decisions. 2 of the 3 KO’es were in the first round. There are many other things to consider in these bouts including the length of the bouts and the types of strikes that were allowed. A lot of this favored the Frenchman’s fight."

Does anyone have more info / better pictures of this?

Gerard Gordeau, a Dutch Savate fighter, competed in UFC 1, winning two matches (including the very first UFC match, with a kick to a sumo fighter’s face, knocking out some teeth) and losing tin the final agains Royce Gracie. He was also the first K1 champion in 1991, acording to his Wikipedia entry. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerard_Gordeau

Fucking 6 year necro :@

I just cant punt into words how lame that post is. I hope you get run over by a convoy of trucks and they only run over your hands and junk :XXfridge:

I don’t know what’s worse, this post or that Wiki article. Gerard in Royce’s guard?!

Hey, I’m a noob, I guess I deserve some of that. But I couldn’t find the date on the last post (not used to the layout yet) and I thought I was answering a previous poster’s question about any savate fighters competing in K1. I was looking for threads about savate and this came up. Live and learn, I guess (and stay out of the way of trucks).

i don’t favor ether of these sports, but i heard of a savatuer that, that broke both arm during a match, won against a japanese kickboxer, despite it.

Hey, Savate and Wing Chun both require slippers. Sorry aside from that very random fact, Savate is very pretty, like TKD, that is all.

I wouldnt mine seeing clips my self either. I like to know what texchniques were used?

So, It was like Savate vs. Shootboxing?

I have no idea about the rules, the only text that site has about it is the thing I quoted. There are a couple of stamp-sized pics, though, which shows the Savate guy is wearing shoes, I don’t think the Japanese were.

Yeah, I’ve heard that the Savate practitioners wear shoes, it’s sorta what they call “old shoe” boxing or something in France.

They do, but nowadays only in Savate rules matches; ie. lots of Savate guys fight in Kickboxing, but they don’t wear the shoes then, because it’s against those rules…

Whereas in this case it seems that the Japanese are barefoot.

I’ve also been wondering if any of these Savate practitioners has ever been in K-1 before? I think there was one practitioner an american Savate guy back then in K-1.

I doubt it was vs shootboxing

I dont like this kind of story, its always the champion of the style pictured as the superior one vs common people who train in the “inferior” one.

I don’t think that is what this post is about, I think it is more of a proving that Savate isn’t as much of a joke as most people thought. I know I thought it was a joke.

ewdfs does have a point actually. Knowing the ranks of those 5 would be a good start.
Shoes vs no shoes does make a big difference, but I don’t see how the rules would go towards the Savate champs in any other way. Savate did have low kicks. Since we’re talking kickboxing and not MT I don’t see what rules could go in the Frenchman’s favour.

Unless by “kickboxing” we’re talking crap early full-contact karate, a 5-0 (3 - 2 in 1st round) result makes me agree with ewdfs. and I’m French
