the best way to avoid leg locks is to practice an art that doesn’t include them.

I don’t do leglocks, but when someone is a leglock “expert” isn’t it generally adviced to stick to closed guard or butterfly guard, and not the other types of open guard?
ahaahahahahahaahahahahahaha, talk to Vargas and Whiteshark on how well a closed guard game works against leg locks…bwhahahhaha (damn I’m an asshole.)
*razzing Mikus for not coming down and training in leg locks although have offered several times.
Omar, when I say support structure I mean this: If you are using your right arm for leverage reinforcement (figure fouring your arm like rear naked choke) then try to staighten one of the arms. If the guy needs to straighten it the try to bend it, if he needs to cut with the blade of his arm force him to turn the other way, if he needs to arch prevent the arch…etc. Break down his support structure to make the submission harder to secure.
Incidently having big legs(like Tom Platz) doesn’t affect twisting leglocks.Just straight ones where you can use the muscles to get out.
At least thats been my experience.
I just checked the responses quick, so if this has already been said…
Usually happens when someone is in your open guard…#1 - keep your heels pressed into the opponents hips and the toes turned out (not the reverse) #2 - if your foot should go past your opp’s hip ( a bad practice but it happens) make sure you have a hand hooked around your opp’s neck so he can lay back and slap a lock on the leg (the one past his hip)

In short, my advice is to be more aggressive.

Honestly, Buy a video or DVD on applying and defending leg locks. That’s really is the best thing for you.
In order to defend against something, you have to understand the mechanics of how it works in the first place.
Get some instructional material, watch it, find a partner and try some things out, and then come back here with more specific questions.
No MMA or Sambo or leg lock videos available here in China. I have no import shit either and it would be prohibitively expensive as I live on a Chinese salary when I am here, about $400/month.
Second, I’m pretty sure I understand the mechanics. Don’t have any skill at applying one but I understand what way they need to twist your foot to break your ankle.
Third, I’d often find the general advice more usefull. I’m not doing BJJ. I wasn’t subbed by leglock yesterday or anything. I just want a little strategic advice.
Omega,
Got it.
Mod Com Gym,
Thanks for the specifics. I kind of thought there must be something like that. Like for RNC - keep your chin tucked. Armbars - don’t reach out to far to someone in your guard. I’ll try to keep those couple pointers in mind.
Leg locks are weird. I think they are just a big blind spot for most people. They seem to come out of nowhere and people tap faassssst. Is there anything other than Sambo that’s been doing them for a long time? Not legal in Judo. Greco Roman? No legs. Even BJJ doesn’t seem to really consider them much. I’m guessing catch probably has them since there’s that kind of showboating creativity involved there. Anywhere else?
Leg locks are becoming very common in BJJ now, more-so for no-gi stuff though.
Are you saying that leg locks are “in style”…all the best fighters are wearing the … .eer. .using them now…
I just got your message from a while ago, Omega. I’ve been busy as hell with summer school, and I’m moving to Santa Cruz in a couple of weeks. I’ll PM you.
Some BJJ fighters specialize in them, but most know them. Rener Gracie is known for his footlocks.
