Pastor Jim Moats has been called out by actual Navy SEALs for making up a fake military career, with details lifted right from our buddy Steven Seagal’s movie Under Siege. The news about Osama bin Laden’s capture by a SEAL team has led to more interest in what SEALs do, and Moats elaborated on this for his local media. It turns out that he had made SEAL claims about Vietnam, and being something of a rebel, which led his superiors to give him cook duty and waterboarding, just like a 1992 era not-yet-fat Seagal.
Moats was known to be spinning his yarns for quite a while. He told his church for five years, and even wore a military surplus store trident medal around town. After being called out by actual Navy SEALs, Moats confessed: ""I never was in a class, I never served as an actual SEAL. It was my dream. ... I don't even know if I would have met the qualifications. I never knew what the qualifications were," he told the Patriot-News. Moats did serve in the Navy from 1970-74, but did not fight in Vietnam.
Retired Navy SEAL and fraud-hater Don Shipley had this to say: "We deal with these guys all the time, especially the clergy. It's amazing how many of the clergy are involved in those lies to build that flock up,"
