Nang Krok or sitting on the mortar is a traditional exercise done in Muay Chaiya. In old times, when a novel boxer wanted to fight in the ring, he would sit on a flipped mortar with his face painted in white paint. Other boxers at the gym would attack using hands and legs and he will have to deflect using the chaiya blocks (Close, deflect, guard, kiss elbow, etc). If the painting was intact or almost intact at the end of the exercise he would be considered ready to fight, as defensive skills are taken as a priority in chaiya.
Today this is one of the exercises practiced in every class, one of the basic three defensive exercises. I share this video for those who are curious about it…me and my friends at the camp like to joke about it and call it Mortar Kombat…
