Forgive me this is a silly question but what do you mean by a ‘Smoker’?
A smoker is generally an unsanctioned match set up between two schools, sometimes I guess they’re little events put on by gyms.
Is that all legal?
Yeah its legal. Sometimes the smokers in the bay area feature multiple schools usually the trainers try to line up fights some people like to spar outside their school to see if they want to compete in sanctioned events and also since fights are few and far between to get some work in. No pros all amateur You’ll probably find Fairtex school and a few others there.
(I remember this from when I used to train Muay Thai and my trainer was setting up fights. Usually it like 5 to 10 bucks to watch.)
There’s no reason why it should be any less legal than sparring.
When people watch, drink, and cheer it goes from art to barbaric…seriously, I’ve seen studies :icon_thum
It’s definitley tougher than sparring, but it’s necessary, if you really want to see how good you are. Not too many if any knockouts, but hurt feelings and bodies, and humbling, sure.

I guess nobody got that I was joking…I thought the simily with the thumb would help…
There is always the asshole factor- there’s always the chance the some guy want’s to go for the belt and knock out his opponent, in what amounts to a friendly competition. There’s one in every crowd. Just protect yourself at all times.
Don’t Joke…Just dont do it alright, its not necessary :icon_eek:
At the last oakland smoker I watched (pacific ringsports) I saw this guy get tossed out of the ring and then totally KTFOed with a tight uppercut. His opponent was a Fairtex guy.
Smokers are not generally friendly sparring sessions. Its a fight, played for keepsies.
I wwent to fairtex for a few years, and didn’t swee any knkockouts, but there was some really rough sparring. I’d say that the fairtex guys are pretty hardcore, as a group. at least when I was there. But you’re right- you can get KTFO in one of these, and, well that’s the breaks. Throwing a guy out of the ring, however- that seems to be an asshole move. It’s not even a sanctioned amateur fight. Byut fuck, that’s why I said- “protect yourself at all times”.
Its a fight. Thats what is it. Its two gyms going at it without being sanctioned by anything. If your gyms are friendly, then its a friendly fight. Its not sparring. Its a fight. If you wanted to spar you wouldn’t be setting up a smoker, you would just go spar. If your gyms are not friendly, then its most likely not going to be friendly. If neither of you know each other, then who knows whats going to happen. However, its still a fight. If your not protecting yourself during a fight (or sparring for that matter), you need to go play ping pong not train for fighting.
Seriously, throwing a guy out fo the ring- that’s not a legit move in MMA, let alone muay thai. Knokcing someone out, well, that’s legit. But I haven’t been to a ton of smokers, so, what the fuck do I know. Anyway- go sign up for it if you can- the gym owner seems like a good dude, so I thought I’d try to throw some business his way.
It was accidental - the result of a clinch/shove. THe other guy went thru the ropes.
Not malicious, just intense and unfortunate. My point is that the ‘fight’ part is for real.
So, who’s going??
