My words aren’t fluffy but my advice is always solid. You should make a fucking decision. Pick one and forget the other.
Perhaps you’re right. Despite being in a position where I really have the flexibility to figure out what career I want to do for the rest of my life, I should make a decision right now!
I have an idea of what being a physician is like, I’ve shadowed and spoken with numerous ones. I have no idea what being a cop is like…
So maybe some people could tell me what that’s like, now that the preliminary stuff is out of the way?
Thanks for the info, on the job injury, I get it. Thanks for your service and regrets that you have to retire from what you really want to do.
From what I’ve seen, I’d avoid detention deputy position. I think you would be supremely bored doing that, from what I’ve seen of you over the years at Bullshido.net.
Yeah, I would be incredibly bored in detentions. I get pretty bored easily.

How are you with paperwork ? I see you wrote you “shadowed” doctors, assuming at work.
Each patient generates paperwork. How do I know ? I was married to an MD for several years, engaged to her through med school, went through the whole thing with her.
However, there are different kinds of MD jobs, from locum tenens type things where you travel around (country/world) filling in for other MDs.
The paper work and followup can get very tedious. Read that as boring and frustrating as fuck.
Sorry I can’t help you directly about what it’s like to be a cop. I’ve worked at a police academy, and as a dispatcher, so I worked pretty intensely with LEO from different agencies. I can tell you that cops, IME, seem to have very specific ideas about what kind of person potentially makes a good cop.
Perhaps you should see if you can do some ride-along with various agencies in your area, and get some first hand experience? Ever consider the US Border Patrol ? FBI ? DEA? The pay is a lot better… and working the Mexican border can get pretty interesting from what I hear.
Ride alongs? I thought that was just a funny ice cube movie, I didn’t realize that was an actual thing. I’ll definitely look into it!
I’ve already started cleaning up my online presence, too.
yeah, ride-alongs are real. I’m not saying every agency does them, but some do.
Good for you on the clean-up Mr. MCMAP, Judo, and Sex Appeal !
50k a year was low would have some better insight on what other departments there were.
50K a year in San Diego is low, really low with your tax free BHA your probably already clearing it.
Median house price in San Diego right now is $478,500
If you put $95,700 down on a house your payment is still going to be
With a 30 year at 3.92% your looking at a monthly payment of $1,810.
Which is still is too high to qualify for.
That is with 95K down!
Hell you the max rent you would “qualify” for using 2.5 instead of 3x max range is
1667/mo.
Now seriously look around how many places do you see that rent for that or less?
When doing a professional job you should be able to live in a decent apartment without having to have a roommate.
That’s in San Diego proper. I wouldn’t live there, I’d live a little more inland.
Besides, I do have a roommate, my wife. And my apartment right now is 1100
That being said I fucking hate this apartment.
As someone that currently drives in from Ramona to Downtown I will tell you something everything has a cost.
Being inland has a cost in gas and time.
Now with the Sheriffs you can end up out at a substation in the county and live nice and close. Still isn’t going to be cheap even in Ramona the houses are still 400+k you just a little bit more land with them then you do down in the city.
North County? Escondido, Vista, San Marcos, Oceanside same thing you might get a bigger house for the money but its still going to set you back quite a bit.

Bullshit. You’re not talking about taking your time to make a decision, which is a prudent thing to do. You’re talking about trying to do both at the same time, which is pure fantasy.

You fucked up, son. You should’ve held on to that. When you tell me that I hear retirement at 45 and spending my remaining years fishing on a pimped out center console on her dime.

That is not what I’m talking about at all. I’m saying I’m going to plug a few years into being a cop, to see if it’s what I want to do with my life. If I didn’t, I’ll still be young enough to change careers.

Yeah, the housing market in California isn’t ideal. Again, my wife makes really good money, and we have no intention on kids for another 10 years.

No, you said you were going to be a brand new cop while simultaneously pursuing your pre req courses. That’s too much.

LOL, no way, Jose’. Both of us valued our sanity and the sanity of our children to do that.
My time with the Marine Corps is coming to a close. 6 glorious years, ending with a medical retirement. After I worked through my five steps, I decided to think about what I want to do.
I’ve always wanted to be a cop, and a doctor. So, I figured why not both? I need a job while I go through my pre reqs, and I’d get bored with anything else. Luckily, my local sheriff’s department is hiring like hot cakes, and they encouraged me to apply!
So, tell me about being a LEO. The good, the bad, the ugly.
I’m still not 100% sure how I won’t be able to fit in a class or two after the academy?
