Dear Vieux Normand,
Let me try to explain myself.
“While not as famous as Money for Nothing and So Far Away, The Sultans of Swing stands out as an excellent example of Dire Straits’ considerable guitar chops and signature sound.”
This is where it all began, when Mr. Machettes comment on Dire Straits reminded me of the music reviewing style of Patrick Bateman, protagonist of the novel, “American Psycho”. Such is the influence on me of this book, that I can hardly listen to “Huey Lewis and the News” without wanting to stuff a live rat into a whores chest cavity, or cut the nose off a vagrant.
Instead of giving in to my violent urges, I hilariously responded with,
You are Patrick Bateman and I claim my $10
Only the well read and erudite itwasn’tme seemed to get this joke.
I made things worse for myself by hijacking poor doofaloofa’s lovely Dire Straits thread with this Genesis think piece cut and pasted from the aforementioned “American Psycho”.
I’ve been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album… ambiguous studies of loss became, instead, smashing first-rate pop songs that I gratefully embraced.
To which doofaloofa responded, quite rightly, with rage. I felt the game was up and, worried people might place me on the wrong side of the Genesis / Straits divide came clean with,
Hey! It was a joke. I fucking hate Phil Collins. Also, I never killed no hookers.
Suddenly, you appear, with unrivaled knowledge of Genesis, a chip on your mighty shoulder and the wrong end of the proverbial stick. Now there’s no way I want to fall out with Bullshido’s foremost Aryan, but neither do I wish to go through the rest of my life with the stigma of being thought of as a fan of Phil Collins.
Felicitations: you win handsomely for writing a post about a band you’re “a big fan of”…yet know so little about. Now you can go back to hearing Phil sing Supremes songs.
So just to clarify, I’m not a “big fan” of Genesis, I’m proud to say I know next to nothing about them. I would also never willingly listen to any sound generated by Phil Collins unless they were cries of pain and anguish.
Just for the record, where do you stand on Clapton?
Thanks for your time,
Bezmond
