I’ve been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that I didn’t really understand any of their work, though on their last album of the 1970s, the concept-laden And Then There Were Three (a reference to band member Peter Gabriel, who left the group to start a lame solo career), I did enjoy the lovely “Follow You, Follow Me.” Otherwise all the albums before Duke seemed too artsy, too intellectual. It was Duke (Atlantic; 1980), where Phil Collins’ presence became more apparent, and the music got more modern, the drum machine became more prevalent and the lyrics started getting less mystical and more specific (maybe because of Peter Gabriel’s departure), and complex, ambiguous studies of loss became, instead, smashing first-rate pop songs that I gratefully embraced.

Gabriel’s solo career only went lame after he started his whole “world-music-plus-imitation-funk” schtick…and there were still a few gems from that time.

If one enjoys insipid whining in lieu of actual vocals, backed by pop-repetitive ‘instrumental arrangements’, then that’s the song for you.

You must be really fond of EDM, dubstep, and elevator music.

Cabbage-Patch Phil stated more than once that he would have preferred to remain the drummer and nothing more. He was right–that way, he might have avoided the faux-R.-&-B. time wastage which consumed both what was left of Genesis and his own musical ‘career’.

This is where it all began, when Mr. Machettes comment on Dire Straits reminded me of the music reviewing style of Patrick Bateman, protagonist of the novel, “American Psycho”. Such is the influence on me of this book, that I can hardly listen to “Huey Lewis and the News” without wanting to stuff a live rat into a whores chest cavity, or cut the nose off a vagrant.

Instead of giving in to my violent urges, I hilariously responded with,

So just to clarify, I’m not a “big fan” of Genesis, I’m proud to say I know next to nothing about them. I would also never willingly listen to any sound generated by Phil Collins unless they were cries of pain and anguish.
