Taking Action Against Obesity
A new study says life expectancy in the U.S. may decline later this century due to a sharper rise in obesity nationwide. The research, published in New England Journal of Medicine, says that if obesity levels continue to rise, statisticians may have to shave two to five years from the average American’s life expectancy. Such a sustained downward shift in projected life expectancy would be the first such drop in more than 200 years.
“This report is really disturbing me,” reports Master Charles Chi, comity leader and owner of Chi’s Martial Arts, "You know, we all have kids, and when we have them, we hope and we expect that our kids are going to grow up, live longer, healthier lives than we do, right? But a new study warms that the future may not be so rosy for our kids. They may actually live shorter, less healthy lives on average due to an epidemic sweeping through that population. Of course, that epidemic I’m talking about is obesity.
In an effort to combat this problem, Chi has launched a new program at his school called “Karate Kidz Fitness for Life Program”. This program, unlike other fitness programs, addresses the mental challenge of maintaining a life style of physical fitness. "Many people join gyms and go on diet programs and do lose weight. But the problem is that they gain it all back because they have not developed the mental aspects of fitness that must be taught with the physical if they are to be truly successful. “Our program teaches that mind/body balance, having the proper mind set and a good diet is essential,” Chi reports.
Master Chi has also teamed up with the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and will be administering the President’s test at his school. Chi’s Martial Arts is the first martial arts school to ever participate in such an undertaking. He will be providing awards for all participants who successfully complete their test.
“If you or your child are 20 pounds overweight please come into my school for a free month of lessons to get you started on the road to fitness”, he said.
