News Article Title
Kyokushin influences on MODERN dutch kickboxing
News Article Content
I was wondering how much influence karate really had on dutch kickboxing. because to me it looks alot like muay thai with more hand combinations and a boxing stance. i see no karate in that whatsoever.
I do understand that the pioneers were kyokushin karatekas BUT they studied muay thai and taught it.
Look at modern dutch muay thai fighters like nieky holzken or robin van roosmalen. They all started in muay thai and dont use any karate techniques. look up theit first fights
And what about ramon dekkers? He never did anything else but muay thai.
And also Why does every muay thai gym offer kickboxing classes? doesnt that show that they are very simillar minus the elbows and the clinch? looking at most glory fighters they look more like ramon dekkers kickboxing style (never did karate) then karate-style.
Of course there are exceptions like davit kiria or semmy schilt but those guys did exclusively karate for a long time before switching to Kickboxing.
Back kick and Axe kick is the only thing I know which comes from karate that Dutch Kickboxers use. Aside from that Muay Thai is a style it’s debatable that kickboxing is even a style as much as a set of rules.
I thought American Kickboxing (at least when it was in it’s track pants phase) was very heavily influenced by karate.
It was indeed. Shoot, is indeed. There are still ISKA American style matches going on, I believe. Freestyle, not as much. Freestyle KB is basically MT with no clinching or knees, almost K1 rules. Or at least it was last time I competed in a KB match.
