Judokarl goes BJJ

Competed in my first ever BJJ tournament as a white belt yesterday and got a fair amount of video, so I figured I’d fire it up here and get some feedback/get yelled at and see what I can do to improve. I’ve been doing BJJ for about a month.

First video No gi 175 and under Novice

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80yYBPZGvyA&feature=youtu.be

I’m white shirt/red ankle. Start off okay then things go south pretty fast! Afterwards my coach pulled me aside and gave me a talking to about keeping my arms in more and not giving up the kimura. My arms were pretty flared out when I was trying to keep him from posturing up from guard and I should have just been more content with sitting in judo pins with my hooks in rather than flopping about hunting for submissions that I haven’t gotten to really drill yet.

Turns out I had a bye in the first round so I get a second match to fight for third.

I’m missing vidoe of the 2nd match at the moment but I’m sure I’ll get it. I get gaurd pulled on me then I get put in a kimura. Thus ending my foray into no gi noivce 175. When I find the video I’ll post it.

Next up we have my no gi absolute match. Loss by points. 11-0 BUT I did have an advantage!

I then go to gi. Where I win my first match. Team mates were fighting on other mats so I didn’t get any vidoe. Guy pulls guard I pass and end up on mount and just kinda fish for something for the rest of the time and don’t get any subs. Victory via points. Hopefully one of his guys got videos and I can add that later.

Next up is my match here. I get stuck in the guys guard and can’t break out. Lose to points. This guy is the same orange shirt guy I lost to in no gi.

Now with a 1 and 1 record in Gi I get the chance to redeem myself. I end up against a very skilled opponet. I get a “takedown” but don’t wind up in the dominate postion to score. Eventually he gets the takedown and starts going for the submission. I gas because I’m a fattie and after trying for awhile to defend just give up.

So all and all pretty good. 6 matches 1 Win. And a boat load of lessons and video to pick apart and figure out what I need to work on. Got another tournament in May so I’ll probably go to that and see how much difference an extra month can make.

When people put me in a kimura it’s almost always because I’m thinking about a technique I’m about to try and forget what my arms are doing as I try to get into position to attempt that technique.

You just told the story of my life. Do you have any tips to avoid that from happening or is it just one of those things that comes from more matt time?

No, I’m a relative noob on the ground. I just try not to let anything get isolated…but the trick, for me, is staying active while not putting myself in a bad position.

Managed to get another match uploaded. I had alot of trouble keeping him from posturing up but I guess that a standard whitebelt issue.
Got another tournament in May
Where is the tournament in May? I’m in your area and my son competes in a lot of these. Wasn’t aware of a May tournament nearby. Am I missing one? US Grappling has a couple tournaments in May, but they’re in Chicago and New York.

I’ll have to get the flyer from my buddy but I’m 99% sure there was one being hosted in Concord. They had some flyers on a table and I skimmed it then shoved it in a buddies gym bag since I didn’t have anywhere to put it. I remember It was a fund raiser and you could only do 2 divisions.

Hmm. Let me know if you find out, if you don’t mind. NAGA is usually in Concord but that’s in June.

Thanks man. Has anybody you train with been to an event put on by this organization? Looks like it might be kind of janky. Concord is a bit of a haul. I don’t mind driving but I don’t want to make the trip if it’s just some boolsheeit.

We’ve found ourselves at some lame fucking tournaments. Like the one where it turned out to be some kind of religious zealots trying to save people from damnation and soforth. And on top of the holy rolling, they wouldn’t let kids pull on the head to finish a triangle. Wuuttt??

None that I know of I might try to hit up the dudes down at Elite Fitness- Concord, NC to see what they know about it. It does look pretty janky but I’m basically trying to hit as many comps good bad or ugly before I manage to get the job as a corrections office and it eats away at my training/ tournament fun time.

EDIT: Holy crap I just visited the website on the flyer. It looks pretty interesting… Yep, I remember it I got a spam email back in january from some random dude and It was for this event! So it looks like its not a grappling grappling tournament. This makes me a sad panda.

Yeah, I’d be concerned about ref quality.

lol, OSEAKOMI WINS AGAIN !

Was hard to see from the video - were you going for udegarame when you had munegatame there? That’s my go-to. Not sure why you kept trying to switch to mount - are there points to be had for changing position?

Neil, full mount gets more points. So he rushed and messed it up.

Hey just wanted to say good job dude, I vividly remember my early days of getting it put on me in BJJ competitions, Eating your first real life competition power double from a D1 wrestler competing at white belt in a GI teaches you some very valuable life lessons.

There are point for switching postions and I kinda know how to submit better from mount and I really wanted to try something cool or flashy from there. I was fishing for the ude but didn’t get it.
