Judo was and always will be King

I’m extremely low ranked in judo. So forgive me for nutriding. I’m only nikyu. But in Japan they would give me at least a shodan. I have a friend who moved to Japan who was a yonkyu when I knew him and 3 months later in he was wearing a black belt. I was like wtf? Anyway everyone should learn judo. Judo is king. I was talking to @W.Rabbit awhile ago about how I was watching a MMA match where this Japanese Judoka threw this 3rd degree Brazilain bjj black belt to the ground and beat the shit out of him in the 1st round and won. Judo is very handy in self defense situations too. I’m not going to mention how powerful it is to throw someone on concrete. I want to mention how judo has a pretty comprehensive self defense curriculum.

I’m trying to keep it simple. People have written the equivalent of thesis papers on the effectiveness of judo. I’m pretty biased towards judo because of my username. This isn’t what I made the thread to talk about but I’m worried that people aren’t studying judo anymore. Judo was THE marital art for a very long time. Even the founder of kyokushin karate was a yondan in judo.

Kano Jigoro, according to decent sources, was the one who encouraged Kenji to train with Ueshiba, and when you survey all of Aikido you will find that all the good Aikido overlaps with well trained judoka.

There’s an Aikido legend that Tomiki was captured by the Red Army in Manchuria and sent to Sibera for 3 years, where he developed kata. Those sources are all Aikido disciples but I could be wrong. Not like Siberian camps keep good records, we mostly know about them from the works of nonfiction survivors.

But there is an awesome book out there that describes some of the Judo-Shotokan Aikido relationship.

Judo Kata: Practice, Competition, Purpose Amazon.com

“Tomiki was born on 15 March 1900 in Kakunodate, Akita Prefecture. He was one of the earliest students of Morihei Ueshiba, and also a direct student of Kano-shihan. A graduate of the Political Economic Department of Waseda University, Tomiki later became Professor of Calligraphy, and also head of the Physical Education Department, at his alma marter. Additionally, he was a member of the Kodokan’s Special Direction Committee and an official of the All Japan Judo Federation. Tomiki was also central to continuing and executing some of the theoretical work to reinforce the martial aspects of judo that Kano started to reconsider near the end of his life”

Judo kata is usually taught at later grades, since earlier ones focus on practicum. It’s kind of backwards from a lot of other JMA but there are clear reasons why, especially because most people don’t want theory etc. They want kickass.

There are little things that are borrowed from judo. In the other Aikido styles you’re encouraged to use all the throws you’ve learned in randori. That’s the equivalent of a judoka trying to use all 60 kodokan throws in randori. My aikido teacher and my judo teacher both told me to learn 3 maybe 4 throws for randori. My judo teacher said if you learn 5 techniques you’re god. My tomiki teacher talks about kuzushi, tsukuri and kake. My judo teacher yelled at us for not doing those 3 things.

In the tomiki style in the beginning you learn all the techniques from one attack. And you also learn all the techniques in chronological order. The other aikido styles you learn a bunch of different techniques from different attacks and it’s just confusing for the new student so you learn slower than the tomiki style.

In plain English they get the snot rocked out of them and they either fall in love or they don’t.

There’s a thread on Bullshido Facebook right now on Platonic love, based on a bullshit anime meme, but it got me thinking.

Are judo/Aikido relationships purely Platonic? Or is there some sort of physical desire? To be struck and strike back, but amongst friends.

I won’t lie, for me, there is a strong physical desire. Not sexual, although that sometimes happens with others. For me I think the best term is “psychosomatic hug”.

I will contemplate this as I sandbag dan ranked people tomorrow.

Isn’t what you’re talking about just male bonding? I guess it can happen between male and females though. There was this 19 year old girl who was a champion in my judo class. She always wanted to do randori with me. I’m not very good but for some reason she wanted to bond with me.

I didn’t do a good job of explaining this but regular aikido’s teaching method is pretty chaotic. You learn to do multiple techniques from at least 3 different strikes, 7 or 8 different grabs and you’re learning to do all this as a new student. You really don’t do any of this as a tomiki practioner.

Yes and No.

Even though homosexual desire was common in ancient Greece (really throughout all time and today ), Platonic love was more generalized with other Platonic ideals, which were more about empathy with others. Platonic love.

One of my best friends ever threw himself at me after a midnight showing of Rocky Horror. I was honored, but had to refuse. Because I think men are gross, and I want women.

Mrs Rabbit abides. I just made her a nice grilled chicken, corn and spinach medley. Whether or not it leads to sex doesn’t matter to me. But rebellions are built on hope.

There you go.

Okay so I read the wikipedia article on platonic love. So platonic love is how I feel about my best friend?

Sometimes I screw with other judo people on the internet. I’ll tell them I can throw judo black belts using aikido. I’ve done it plenty of times in judo class. I would say yeah I’ve even used aikido on a guy in class who competed in the olympics. They act aikido being used successfully against judo is impossible and is even blasphemy. Lord Asia and Omega did something similar. They would screw with muay thai and kickvboxers and say they could beat them up using kung fu.

Yeah unless you actually want to fuck them.

One is a Bajiquan guy, the other studied the Five Family Fist.

But you have to realize the common thread here, we kung fu people don’t fall down or die easily. See those legs? We can’t be destoyed with conventional weapons.

The training instills resilience. Unlike say, BJJ which only instills overconfidence.

I watched this youtube video of this guy reacting to a video of a bjj blackbelt trying to take down a guy who was at a considerable distance from him who had a gun. So yeah you’re right about that.

Like every Systema demo ever.

Are you on the FB group? We laugh over at least once of those a day.

Master Ken has some really funny ones.

@BKR

Hey,

Thoughts on USJF vs USA Judo?

Asking for a friend.

There’s no way he’s been reading this thread the entire time.

Who, Master Ken? I disagree. He is well aware of Bulllshido.net.

@BKR, AKA Beaker? He and I are like brothers.

We raised sons together. I’m going to to visit him this spring and it’s going to be wonderful.

I honestly don’t think he’s watching this thread. Hey BKR I could throw Teddy Riner in my sleep. See nothing. He’s not reading this thread.

He only logs in now and then.

I could ask him right now on the BS Discord but I hate Discord. Better to get stuff on public record and all.

Speaking of homosexuality. I can’t stop noticing at :29 how much more attractive Uta’s brother is than her. She’s still a cute girl though.

I’m pretty sure everyone except the girl in the middle is a real judoka.
