Is there ANY advantage to training Muay Boran or Lerdrit over Muay Thai

So a few from my mma dojo are looking at hitting to Tiger Camp next summer for a training week holiday, and Ive been doing some reading into other thai arts after looking at Muay Boran (the traditional stuff, though there seems to be aspects of ‘the deadlyz’ in some of the writing about how its too dangerous for the ring etc) and the Krabi Krabong (weaponry training, looks interesting from a historical point and from my dabbling in Silat). Upon finding out more theres this thing called Lerdrit thats apparently the nastiest mauy thai moves reserved for the military… but doesnt that make it basically Muay Thai with possibly a small amount of extra stuff?

It doesnt sound like theres much advantage to training Muay Boran or Lerdrit over Muay Thai unless you really dig traditional styles.

<snap judgement>That Lerdrit sounds like Thai spiced Krav</snap judgement>. I don’t know a great deal about Muay Boran; having never trained it or know anybody that does. From observations, there are differences in the guard stances and a few techniques differ but I could see one being played within the rule set of the other without too much hassle. After all, they were both developed to kick-punch someone in the face.

The ‘Krav’ thing was what I was thinking.

No. Muay Boran is in no way better than Muay Thai. Besides, I’m pretty sure the only instructor qualified to teach authentic Muay Boran is Kru Preang who teaches the Muay Thai Chaiya style. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U82CtBYUEwE

Modern Muay Thai incorporates many elements of Western boxing as well which I believe have been a positive influence on the style.

Isnt Lerdit seperate from Muay Boran?

It’s a style of fighting derived from Muay Boran, but has no appreciable advantage over Muay Thai.

its nice to feel I have contributed to this community in a way beyond diss some fuckhead who cant take criticism of his boxing/kickboxing in Action Pants™

I think there is a lot of missinformation on Muay Boran or Traditional Thai styles. I am going to open a thread in this advanced striking forum, as the traditional forum does not have Muay.

Actually Kru Preang is not the only, just the most mediatic, but he has a pretty bad reputation in Thailand due to past missbehaviour against other schools from his side and his students.

Agreed with this bad reputation

I completely agreed. I saw these students working and just the basic exercises they find the way not to do them correctly, and then he is one of those who try to have the monopoly of Muay Chaiya and to proclaim himself Grand Master of Muay Chaiya with Kru Preang they are more business man than anything else and the rates are much more expensive than at Kru Lek.

Kru Lek is the oldest and one of the few who followed the teachings of Pramajarn Kaet Sriyapai (who was considered the Grand Master of Muay Chaiya, hence the title Pramajarn) who still teaches, and who followed the teaching of Kru Thong Lor Yalae who was one of the best students of Pramajarn Kaet and a very good fighter with more than 200 fights to his credit in Muay Chaiya, after his death. Kru Lek is the eldest and he is not motivated by money but by the preservation of traditional arts such as painting, Thai puppet making and Muay Chaiya. And he doesn’t pass on a watered-down version of the art after it’s up to you.

In the ancient Muay Thai art used in ancient battles, the techniques were much more effective than in modern Muay Thai because of the much more rigorous techniques, techniques and details used (for example, joints, feet, knees and elbows) in Muay Thai . The ancient art of Muay also paid more attention to techniques that crippled the enemy or killed him. The technique itself has many variations that can be used situationally.
