Horsin' around

Horse meat is good when properly prepared.

Yeah, there’s one chunky little pony named Cloud. He’s been ridden by at least two generations of riders and is well known in that area (you even get a discount at Horseworld if your kid specifically has lessons on Cloud). Guess you’d put him in a stew?

Slow cooked in a crock pot with copius amounts of peppers and garlic.

Nom nom.

disclaimer

We’ve had to put down a fair number of horses in my lifetime but never ate any. I did have horse in Malta.

Mom still keeps four as pets. They’re never ridden.

Horse is like any lean game meat. Don’t grill it well done. Either slow cook it, or sear it rare.

So many responses to this. But I’ll go with the first question that popped into my head - tell me about your time in Malta!

Once upon a time I leased a horse:

For context of how long ago said child in this picture is now 14!!! Also that freaking horse was huge, I don’t rember the details to much but I think the lease was $250/mo with Food and Boarding included and we split it with someone else. Then that person got into a fight with the owner of the horse and it sort of ended things after 3 or 4 months. Oh well.

Most horses get antibiotics, eat hay or grain that has some sort of level of insecticide or herbicide in it… and are essentially not supposed to be eaten. I guess in a survival situation, one would just go ahead and have at it, though.

I rode a horse in Jamaica one time. His name was Crocodile Dundee. I think I was right at the maximum weight limit because as soon as I sat on him, he turned his head around and looked at me like he wanted to kick me in the face. He refused to walk a few times and then bucked me off into the water at one time. That was the first time I rode a horse. My wife wanted to, she loves horses.

I had a better experience a few years later but if given the choice, I would chose not to ride one of those big bastards.

I will tell you this much, it is very weird to be on top of a creature that you know, could kill you at any moment it makes the choice to do so.

I’m going to cull all this horse shit, mostly because I want a trollshido thread called “Horsin’ around.”

But, not before I talk about my favorite childhood horse (we had 3). Genuine free-range mustang that my grandfather sourced from BLM. She was a wild one, too. Got a hair up her ass, once, and got me to chest-plant into a low-hanging cedar branch. That was, shall we say, unpleasant. But, it was then I learned the meaning of the saying “get back on the horse,” and/or “get back in the saddle.”

Trollshido!!!

But the great god himself declared:
Every child should learn to swim, ride, and fight." - Helio Gracie.

I know @Evergrey would love a dedicated equestrian thread. Maybe I’ll move it up, but I’ll have to excise the edibles. Depends on interest…

I just want a Leased a Horse tag

Also huh looks like I am wearing a BJJ school shirt in that photo.

I think a solid 40% of my t-shirts are BJJ schools or comps.

goodllun - Most people I know at the riding school have a part lease on a horse. Easiest way in the city to ‘own’ one.

There is something very cute about Bullshido having a horse thread. Now we can share pics on best braiding techniques for showing, have pyjama parties and draw pony and love heart doodles everywhere. Lol.

Fun fact. My ex stepfather trained an American Futurity winner. Sadly he had a falling out a couple of weeks before the race. Owner was his own father.

David trained the horse. His father Wilbur took credit.

My wife worked in a stable when she was in high school. She even used to sleep in the loft over the stables when she worked there on the weekends and summers. Mucking stalls, feeding them, and exercising them. The only reason I know the term “mucking stalls” is because that’s what she says she did. She still has her riding boots and helmet thing. She’s wanted a horse forever and always has to go talk to them whenever we are close by some.

The damn things listen to her, too. It’s freaking weird. She’s some kind of horse whisperer.
