*Hi I'm a dumba** who doesn't know how bullshido works

There is something wrong with the Karl Gotch download. The codec is not there.

This is interesting.

Most of what I do is bodyweight exercises. For conditioning I do Pushups, Chinups, Dips, Hindu Squats,Hindu Pushups, Burpees and so forth.

For Strength Training I do Handstand Pushups, One Arm Pushups, One Legged Squats, even One arm Dive Bomber Pushups. Although I can only do 5 on each arm. Meh. But the ONE exercise I still do with weights is the is Squats. Mainly with a Barbell. In my opinion there is no exercise without weights which can replicate it.

Leg Shots is all you need ?

Greetings all.

This is someting I have come to realise. It seems to me that if you have a good Double/Single Leg Shot, then that is the best takedown one can ever use. I am speaking from both experiance in Freestyle Wrestling and BJJ/MMA. It’s easy to learn, quick to execute and very hard to defend against.

I have “Backup” moves like the Arm Throw, Hip Toss or maybe even the Cross Body Throw. But it seems to me 9 out of 10 times a good Leg Shot is the best thing to get your opponant on the ground.

Has anyone else found this.

Glad I stopped by on this thread.

This sums it up to-a-Tee.

This is why Combat Sports produce the better quality fighters. You HAVE to fight. You have to prove your ability against a well trained and highly conditioned athlete. The intructors of these styles recognise the importance of sparring and training against resisting opponants. They are not interested in hiding behind tradition or anything like that. Find out what works.

Learn the teachnique, drill the technique and apply the technique in sparring. Best way to keep it, really.

What exercises with weights could replace Squats or Deadlifts for that matter.

How can you say Bodyweight exercises are crap. I mean resistance is resistance right ? Try and do the following:

10 Handstand Pushups
10 One Arm Pushups. You can elevate your feet off a chair to make it harder.
10 One Legged Squats
10 One Arm Chinups.

Great strength workout.

Or for fitness work try this:

Sequence 1
20 Hindu Squats
10 Hindu Pushups

Repeat the sequence 5 times

Sequence 2
10 Burpees
5 Reverse Pushups
10 Clap Pushups

Repeat the sequence 5 times. That routine will give you one of the best workouts you will ever feel.

I would say Burpees/Bodyweght exercises/Pad work and sparring. Pad work and sparring especially. Things like Biking and running are fine but your training to fight. Try and do 10 hard rounds on the heavy bag. Each round goes for 2 mins with a 30 second ebreak between rounds. Work the heavy bag hard each round, no easy stuff.

I think when you can do that for 10 rounds you’ll be in fight shape.

Good luck, eat right and get plenty of rest.

We have had a few Judo guys come in to cross-train at my BJJ club. Two of these happen to be Brown belts who have fought in Nationals and South Pacific Championships. I can shoot in on them from the clinch no problem. Or, at least work in a High Crotch takedown. If that fails, I usually clinch for a body-lock with a latteral toss.

No disrespect to Judo. Believe me, these guys have slammed me hard with a few throws. The first time one of them nailed me with Osoto Gari- (outside reaping throw ?) I knew I was hurt !

For some reason I just find Wrestling takedowns more natural for me. I find that if I keep a Wrestlers stance, low with hips back it makes it hard for people to throw you. Easier to grab their legs/ankles too.

Ahh. I’ve been using Windows Media Player. How do I get Divx ?

Well, I’ve never fought Randy Couture or Sylvia hahahah. Sorry dude. I don’t know about you or anyone else here but a I’m not a proffessional fighter. Just someone who traines 3-4 nights per week and competes when possible.

Thanks for your suggestion anyway. Look I’m not saying I don’t use other throws like the Arm Throw or Hip Throw. Leg shots for me get the job done faster and easier. That’s all.

Thanks everyone. You guys make interesting points. This has made me realise I need to brush up on my upper body throws. I’ll try again tommow night at Wrestling.

I will suggest this.

Make sure your cardio is in Tip-Top shape. Hill sprints, Burpees Intervals, Car Pushuing, Heavy Bag work and lots of rolling. Some strength work is fine but to fight well you need to have great stamina.

Sorry dude, my bad.

While we are on Leg shots. If your not close enough to touch your opponant, your not close enough for a leg shoot. I see so many first-timers trying a Double Leg when they are just too far away. Even if you have a good sprawl it’s hard to defend on an experianced shooter.

Well, I so Deadlifts/Squats. But thats about it when it comes to weights.

The rest of what I do is Bodyweight only exercises. I’m a firm believer that Bodyweight exercises alon can get you very strong and very fit. Many, proffessional Boxers and Wrestlers have supported this idea aswell.

But I am keen to hear what you so for strength and fitness if bodyweight exercises are no good. Please tell.

Your opinion does not equal anything significant either.

Exercises like Handstand Pushups, One Arm Pushups with your feet elevated off a chair, One Legged Squats are not rubbish. They are all legitimate exericses for increasing strength. Make no mistake, A One Arm Chinup or One Arm Divebomber Pushup is a clear demonstration of strength.

As for the second routine I listed of Hindu Squats/Hindu Pushups/Burpees/Reverse Pushups, read the workout over again. It’s gut wrenching. My Wrestling coach loves to put us through that one and it’s put some very conditioned wrestlers to shame. If you can do that routine with ease your either:

(a) Lying
(b) A highly trained fighter

My money is on option (a).

Your’re actually a Certified Fitness Trainer ?

Sorry, I thought that was like an Internet joke or something. I wasn’t aware that you are an actually Fitness trainer. Didn’t mean to be insulting. But could you explain your point of view. I don’t mean to be a pest but you have me curious.

“Train to be better at what you do”. So your saying if I’m training to be a better grappler, well then drill skills and wrestle, wrestle and wrestle some more. Being a pushup monster won’t mean you’ll be a good wrestler. Okay, that makes sense.

But as for progressively gaining strength, what would you reccommend ?

This is very true.

But sometimes experianced grapplers recieve injuries when thrown. Especially when someone lands on top of them. That’s the worst. At my club we have a policy where if your going to throw someone, just lift and dump them. That’s it. My instructor says when performing a throw, don’t come crashing down on top of your partner because it can cause too many injuries such as broken ribs and back problems.

Another reason why I went with Wrestling. More of a focus on Leg shots. Easier and safer than most throws and they get the job done nicely.

Thank you very much !

I mean it. That was a wonderful piece of information. But what lifts for strength increase would you reccommend ? The good old Bench Press and Squat. Or maybe the One Arm Dumbell Snat ? I take it compond movements are the key. But to tell the truth I’m forever scared I will do some serious lower back damage.

Bodyweight exercises in high numbers.

Equpoise gave me some very useful information on another thread titled “Endurance for Lifting”. In fact it’s still recent here in this forum. You guys can read what he stated on the last page.

But it got me thinking. Is there really a need to do Bodyweight exercises in high numbers ? What does it achieve ? It seems to me fitness is relative. No amount of Bodyweight Squats or Pushups will get one in condition to wrestle hard for 5 rounds. Or last a few rounds in the ring for something like Kickboxing.

My understanding is if you want fitness for grappling, then grapple. Put your mouthguard in and wrestle hard for 3 minutes. Stop, rest for 30 seconds and go again. Repeat 7 times and puke at will.

If you want fitness for striking, work the heavy bag, Kick shields and do lots of sparring for as many rounds as you can last.

To increase strength one must lift heavy for low repetiions. Now I know there are some Bodyweight movements like Handstand Pushups, One arm pushups and One Leged Squats which prove effective strength builders. But as for doing 500 Pushups, is there a need for it ?

Thanks guys.

No other responces ?
