BOGOTA (Reuters) - A karate academy was not the best target for a robbery, a Colombian thief found when his attempt got the chop from practicing students, police said on Friday.
The robber was recovering in a hospital in Santander province north of Bogota after the martial artists used their combat skills and took away his gun.
“An individual entered a martial arts school with a firearm but they managed to react, put their knowledge to use and disarmed him,” Santander police commander Col. Julio Cesar Santoyo told local Caracol radio.

Bogota - A feckless stick-up man chose the wrong target when he was beaten and hospitalized in an attempted robbery of a karate school in Bucaramanga in northwestern Colombia, police said.
“The man entered the academy with a firearm, but could not intimidate the dozens of students, who fortunately reacted and disarmed him,” said Colonel Julio Cesar Santoyo, police commander in the province of Santander.
Police arrived at the scene only to take the would-be robber to hospital for treatment of multiple contusions at the hands of the karate students.-- AFP

So how did no one get shot? Really, how did no one not get shot?
My uneducated guess: probably good old fassioned suprise. People who brandish guns sometimes expect other people to do what they say because the gun has some kind of magic powers: people are just suposed to do what you say when you point a gun at them. When the karate students did NOT do what they were told, the gunman now faces the cold hard fact that he has to shoot someone or beat feet (assuming the gun was real and loaded). He hesitates, all it takes is one person to whack him in the head and the rest of them jump him. Checkmate.
What could the guy do, really? Once one of the karate guys moved, and the others went “Holy shit! Gotta back him up!”, the gunman probably had a choice between getting beaten up, disarmed, and arrested for attempted robbery, or shooting one or a couple of people, getting severely beaten by their very pissed-off friends, and then facing murder charges. I may be talking out of my ass, but it seems to me that with a single handgun against a roomful of people, the gun is only useful as a psychological tool. If they move en masse…
I read something a couple of years ago about a guy with a bat who tried to car jack a minivan FULL of Judo black belts on their way to a tournament somewhere in australia.
Dont remember anything specific, but it was funny as fuck.
From memory I read it in FHM, so it may well not actually have happened
The best story is about a guy attacking a man at a campsite with a hatchet. Hit him in the head from behind. Ended up picking the wrong guy. Was a Judoka. Who then killed him.
