Hazlet/Holmdel - A 34 year old Holmdel resident and martial arts expert was arrested October 18 for simple assault in connection with an altercation with the owner of a Holmdel Road gas station, according to police. Renzo Gracie was charged in the incident that reportedly injured Phil’s Service Center owner Phil Pente. Gracie is currently recognized as the World Ultimate Fighting Champion, and is a reputed international kickboxer.
According to Detective Lt. Robert Mulligan, the incident began when Gracie’s wife reportedly entered into a dispute with Pente. “Pente and Gracie’s wife allegedly exchanged words at the station on October 18,” Mulligan said. Subsequently, Gracie’s wife, who was not identified by named, reportedly returned to her Holmdel residence and notified her husband of the confrontation. Mulligan explained that Renzo Gracie then went to the service station himself and confronted Pente concerning the earlier words with his wife.
Gracie alleged that Pente pushed him, and he, in turn, reportedly struck Pente in the face with his open hand in a martial arts type blow. However, Pente told police that he was attacked by Gracie without provocation. The Hazlet police were then called to the scene and Patrolman Richard Jaeger transported Gracie to police headquarters, where he was booked and processed. Meanwhile, Pente was transported to Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel, where he was treated for a reported facial injury. Gracie was charged with simple assault and he was released on his own recognizance. Gracie faced a municipal court hearing on October.
