Is Full Contact sparring necessary for every martial art?
someone actually voted for little romo rofl…
What is a romo anyway? I never heard that before =/

that would have been peepee.
Royce Gracie = “Hoyce” Gracie
Romo = “Homo”
R’s in Portuguese are pronounced “H”. It’s an old gag. Romo/Rorny/Rottie/ etc…
In my opinion and experience, full contact sparring is neccesary in order to develope the skills that are needed in combat. I feel that a min of safety equipement should be worn. All that is really needed is a cup, mouthpiece, and headgear.
thanks for the romo clarification!

First of all, a little clarification:
Migo is a nerd who watches Star Trek, still lives with his mommy and will never get laid without paying for it.
I think that fullcontact sparring is not an option for EVERYONE. your going to come across students that will never want to be hit full force. Some students will be tough and athletic enough to handle it. I think that sparring with hard contact or just continous sparring with medium contact is enough for many people. Even people who are initially afraid of full contact will warm up to the idea once they have been hit with SOME contact and realize that they can take alot more than they once believed.
Protective gear is a must. Gloves, Thai shin and instep protectors, a groin cup, mouthguard are ALL helpfull in creating an injury free environment. I really dont think head contact should be included at ALL unless its very controlled and open handed. I think that Kyokushin’s rule system, coupled with a little grappling and some protective gear makes for a great sparring session.

Full-Contact sparring is needed to prepare someone to fight. “Self-defence” classes where you just palmstrike/knee some dummy or bag is worthless. You gotta be able to fight. Learning to take a few hits doesn’t hurt any. I really don’t agree on not having head contact, thats where a lot of people are going to hit you, so you should learn to defend against it, and how to hit back to their head too. They won’t follow your rules if they’re trying to beat you up or kill you, are they?

I didnt say that you shouldnt practice defending and delivering head shots, but you shouldnt perform them whie SPARRING. I doubt anyone here who advocates that has ever practiced full contact eith head shots. I broke my nose twice WITHOUT head shots. It looks kind of fukked up now too. Someone can swing wild and hard at your head with focus mitts the same way someone would in a streetfight and you can practice blocking , slipping, clinching and anything else, WITHOUT ever getting hurt. You can also put on 12 oz gloves and throw straight techniques to the head and practice parrying and countering.
If your training for a fight in the RING its a different story. Your a fighter then, and your willing to get hit and you have to expect injuries as part of the game.

I’m willing to get injured, if its my dumb fault, hehe. The way I see it, is that I should be able to handle headshots while sparring. Boxing Gloves are quite useful to that end. But I’m going to make damn sure I’m up to snuff before I step in a ring.

Full contact sparring will be practiced with proper restraint. There should always be a teacher or a supervisor watching you. Without restraint, we are merely teaching street fighting.

full contact sparring is a necessity, hands down. None of that pussy light contact shit. If you do that then you won’t have a clue how to take a hit and when you get into a fight and you get hit you will have no idea how to react.
USA,
I agree, I love to spar & roll hard…If we use sticks we throw on fencing masks, but other than that…spar hard, shoot for takedowns, roll to sub.
I have suffered black eyes, fractures, fat lip, but damn it’s all worth it!! I know what it’s like to be hit & wouldn’t flinch & stop to think about it if someone on the street hit me…That sounds strange, but my instructor says when he has seen someone loose a fight, it was when they get hit, stop to think “oh shit” just for that second, you lose the edge…

Although I voted in full support of full contact during “motel wrestling”, I don’t think it is necessary for EVERY martial art. Are those of you who think it is saying that Tai Chi is not a martial ART, or are you advocating that all those old people in the parks in the China should be strapping on the pads and beating the hell out of each other to qualify as martial artists ?
The question in the Poll seems to have been interpreted as whether full contact is necessary for martial effectiveness. In which case I would still answer no. In fact, full contact sparring has a down side to martial effectivess. Yes, it does reduce the chances that you will freeze after getting hit, but there are a fair amount of bad habits that can be picked up as well. For those of you who are “conditioned” to take hits, how well are you conditioned to taking shots to the throat, neck, eyes, groin, knees, back of the head, etc ? Are you avoiding these shots in your “full contact” bouts ? If so, you are getting in the habit of avoiding the most effective shots and giving yourself a false sense of security because your “opponent” is not trying to take them. I have also seen people do things with protective equipment on that they would not dare to do without it. That is a bad, and dangerous, habit waiting to happen.
I also have a problem with the fact that the use of gloves encourages punching techniques, which are often less effective than open hand techniques (and can result in damage to the hand).
Full contact fighting brings you a step closer to the intensity of a real confrontation, but there is also a false (and dangerous) sense of security that comes from thinking that it is close to the reality of a life or death confrontation.
