I always felt that the NRA had been causing long term damage 2A rights in the long run by tying them to the Republican party and certain identity groups. That the real key to upholding the 2A was to make firearms an accessible and positive experience for non traditional demographics and political orientation. The only way to make something not be a scary abstract wedge issue is to give people firsthand experience and knowledge. This loss is a tragedy not just for family and friends, but also for longer term 2A advocacy.

Man’s depression had what to do with the NRA and 2nd Amendment?
Sorry. You’re stretching for relevance. 2nd Amendment is not a D or an R thing. It’s a right set forth in the Constitution.
Take a liberal out to shoot. Best thing you can do to further firsthand experience and knowledge.

pink sucks. Eye of the beholder…
Planning to take someone out shooting next month.
At the same time, I got fed up with the NRA sending me letter after letter about “liberals” this and “liberals” that. Most of the people I grew up with would probably claim to be liberals. How is the NRA smearing them repeatedly while asking me for money solving anything in the long run? How would I possibly convince someone to trust me and start a journey learning about firearms if the most visible 2a org in the public eye is repeatedly smearing that person in writing and claiming that they hate freedom or whatever? It certainly doesn’t make it easy.
To be honest I’m ready to tell Wayne LaPierre where he can shove those letters at this point. I mean the stuff he signs his name to is far more aggressive and malicious than “basket of deplorables” which got people so upset over HRC.
EDIT: So to more closely address your post, 2a shouldn’t be a D vs. R issue, but the NRA certainly isn’t helping it to not be a D vs. R issue. And rhetorically and in terms of attacking US citizens who might self-identify as “liberals” they are certainly taking it much further than they have to. Is it good politics in the long run? Obviously not.
EDIT 2: I mean the NRA apparently has buddies in Russia. So why don’t they do articles about the history of leftists and marksmanship, for example, an article on Lyudmila Pavlichenko? At least try to do outreach to people who consider themselves leftists. Wouldn’t that make much more sense than just slamming the door in their face?

His depression hurt the cause in the sense that he was a powerful voice for gun rights that wasn’t right wing. And you’re right, it shouldn’t be a D or an R thing. It been turned into a wedge issue. I’m not a liberal in the cringey modern sense, but I do hold a lot of left leaning views. The gun community can be a bit isolating for people like that these days.

Oh stop. It is a D or an R thing now. Since LIBERALS started using everything under the sun to lie about gun stats and conservative started saying all guns matter, 2A went right out the window and became an either or option.
Maybe where you live.
Considering the shit that comes out of your mouth and BFM’s about guns it isn’t about where I live. I can pull douchiness from all states, counties, cities and municipalities which would prove you wrong. We aren’t talking majority vs minority because gun owners would lose all day long in that regard.

What shit?
There’s douchie people everywhere. There’s also a lot of people in this part of the country who vote Democrat yet have firearms.
