GOLD COAST, Australia - Former boxing champion Jeff Fenech was charged with stealing three watches worth $290 from a jewelry store.

The 41-year-old Fenech and another man were arrested Wednesday and questioned by police Thursday. He is to appear in court Friday.

Fenech won the IBF bantamweight title in 1985, followed by the WBC junior featherweight crown in 1987 and the WBC featherweight title in 1988. He retired in 1996 with a 28-3-1 record, including 21 knockouts. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2002.

In January 2004, Fenech underwent plastic surgery after being stabbed in the face with a broken bottle. Later that year, a gunman fired shots at his home in Sydney.

Fenech trained former champion Mike Tyson for his last fight on June 11. Tyson quit after the sixth round after desperately trying to foul his way to victory against Kevin McBride in Washington.[/i]

Wow, storied past.

That really is something…maybe all that hardship he encountered convinced him to take up a riskier life style?

Was on the news last night.

The ‘official’ version is that he is being charged as an accessory or something.
His friend has pleaded guilty to shoplifting 3 watches from a shop. He was trying to steal them to pay Jeff back for his generousity. They are now trying to determine if Jeff was distracting the staff in the shop at the time.
