Doxxing on this site

Hello,

My real name has been “doxxed” on this site.

I prefer not to repeat it here because it has been archived in google already once and I would like to avoid this happening again.

I have made requests to two moderators to help with this issue. One, battlefields, has advised I just make a posting here, while the other Nutcracker Sweet! said in early November that he would escalate it to someone else’s concern. I have not seen or heard of anything since.

In that time I have sought out legal advice.

The advice given is to make a simple request that the posts that have my name in them, which is defamatory and made by some anonymous user with the intention of hurting my reputation has indeed accomplished this goal. I have documented this.

I would prefer not to escalate this to a legal action on this site, but am prepared to do so if the posts are not promptly removed. They contain false information. They identify my personal name with false accusations and actually serve no purpose. They are also over 15 years old but still archive on first page of google for my name and profession. As I have said, they have succeeded in hurting my reputation and I have documented this. So I do have a legal case if this request is not taken seriously. I truly hope this can be handled quickly, and easily. I’m familiar with forum software and given that the thread itself has had little contribution in over 15 years, the one or two posts that have my name in them will not be missed in any way.

I am happy to direct whomever can make these changes to the postings. Please private message me and I will provide you with those links. Otherwise you may speak with nutcracker, sweet! who is one of the mods I have been conversing with privately. I have also tried private messaging Phrost, but have not received an return mail.

I have done my due diligence from a legal perspective. I hope someone on this end can reciprocate and remove my name and this can be over quickly.

Here is some information on doxxing:

Thank you.

If you want to refute the posts, by all means do so. If you believe that they rise to the level of defamation, hire a lawyer and take it to court. Otherwise no one here really cares and being this vague makes your post pointless anyways. Also doxxing is not technically illegal most of the time. It’s just shitty. It’s only illegal to post PI if it was obtained illegally or you have a legal obligation to not share it. If the information was publicly available before, 1a explicitly protects reposting it.

Not sure if you can be Doxxed if your not a poster.
If your a public figure you should have no expectation to privacy.
If you have videos out in a public medium with your real name and they get shared and commented on your not being doxxed.
Being doxxed would be say Ghost above coming here with the expectation of his privacy being maintained and I say oh no no no Ghost really <insert identity>
However I am not one of the sites lawyers, and am not qualified to state if your doxxed or not.

I’m not going there. Googling “man train” from here, years back, has left me gun shy.

This new member’s name allegedly appears in a very old thread. I decline to say which thread (and I would encourage him to similarly refuse), or what his name is, because that would be actually doxxing him.

So far, the only connection between our new friend and this thread, in question, is his insistence that the named individual is him.

I encourage you all to drop the matter, as our new friend seems litigious.

All I’ve asked is for the the two posts in question be removed. It would do no harm to a thread that no one has visited in years and serves no purpose whatsoever. Refuting a fake claim against me just brings more attention to it which has already done enough damage. My request is not unreasonable. I will respond to the support staff member that seems interested in knowing what it is about. and can hopefully act in a way that is duly reasonable and simply remove the offending posts.

Right, the claim is so fake that you can’t rebut it.

The attention it brings has had a negative affect on my career because it archives on google’s first page. What’s so hard to understand? Opening up a thread that has been dead for years will just increase it’s ranking within google’s algorithm. Not everything is worth fighting, even and especially this. Do you have something to gain by responding?

Is this anything like going after someone for a bad yelp review?

This should all be construed as no-nonsense, friendly advice.

I have some bad news. Simply creating this account and navigating the site has already caused additional SEO linkage between the events of 15 years ago and today.

For instance I was able to discover the thread in question in under 5 minutes. And I’m slow.

Your best bet is to not give a shit and let it go. Or, hang out and build yourself a persona that represents the real you.

The absolute worst thing is to advocate behind an anonymous persona and crusade against the site or its members. Then you will only join 20 years of tears that preceded you.

OK, so it brings you negative attention. You have not established that this attention is unjustified. If you do, and that goes in the thread, that exonerates you.

There’s a public interest in allowing open discussion of people’s credentials and qualifications. That’s kind of the whole point of this forum.

Bullshido doesn’t exist to make you happy.

It’s also apparently already a 1st page hit on their name so how much worse can it get?

Everything this man just said is correct.

Regular members here will appreciate the significance of my saying so.

Pay for some SEO then or something.

Create a persona to bring more attention to something that is false and brings absolutely no value whatsoever to this site? Why?
These sorts of sock puppet posts have been deleted on other sites they have inadvertently been archived on by administrators of those sites without any headache or drama. I don’t understand the resistance to a simple request. It archives first page on google. It’s false. It was not me. It brings no value. I’m having a hard time understanding the resistance to just getting rid of it as a courtesy to the person it’s affecting.

None of this affects any of you here, yet it’s oddly a topic that interests those who respond and apparently brings out some sort of combative desire. I’m just not getting it.

None of it discusses credentials or qualifications, at all. The sock puppet was pretending to be me, and I never prior to this account have registered on this forum or ever contributed. It’s false, misleading and defamatory.

Explain why it matters to you?

You’re right, you probably won’t get my combative desires. That’s part upbringing, part personal lifestyle choice. I will however attempt to advise you in good faith, from a Joe User perspective.

The way I see it, you can either follow Sub’s advice and let it go, or you can ignore his caution (as I am for a moment), try to correct the record yourself, which would involve you taking some risks and yes potentially bringing more attention (which you are already doing by creating interest here). Like updating said thread with “hey guys, that’s not me! I’m the real me!” and taking your chances.

If what you’re most concerned about is someone finding your name in a search, you have everything you need to nullify it by challenging the “sockpuppet”'s version of reality. The price of finding truth is eternal vigilance.

Mr. Rabbit, you don’t appear to be a moderator or administrator here, but I’ll ask all the same; what’s the resistance to just getting rid of something that adds no value to any discussion whatsoever about martial arts? What value does a post that has the sole purpose of portraying someone in a negative light, to harm their reputation which it has achieved, add to this forum? A moderator could, with one click, just remove the offending post and no one would be any the wiser in that thread which, again, serves no purpose but to flame a 15 year old controversy.

Many of my clients have brought this to my attention. None of them have read through the whole thread. They just find the one archived when they search my name and my profession. No one is going to be interested in reading through the whole drama. People like 280 character information these days (twitter) and hardly read through anything any more.

So again, what is the resistance to just doing the right thing and removing the harm it’s causing?

It’s literally two posts.

I’m amazed a moderator even requested I make this public request here, and I’m more amazed at how caustic many of the responses have been.
