LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Crowds in Arkansas were lured by the promise of cage fighting and $1 beer, but, police say, what they got was two men ripping off each other’s clothes and kissing.
Sacha Baron Cohen of Borat fame is suspected of orchestrating the stunt.
“We had a contract for cage fighting. We were deceived,” said Dwight Duncan, president and chief officer of Four States Fair Grounds in Texarkana, where the first of two fights took place last month.
Matt Labov, a Los Angeles publicist for Baron Cohen, had no comment Monday about the faked fights.
The stunt comes as Baron Cohen is filming the movie Bruno, named after the gay Austrian fashion reporter he developed for Da Ali G Show.
At the second event in Fort Smith, Police Sgt. Adam Holland said organizers told him a character named “Straight Dave” would goad a planted audience member into the ring for a fight and the stunt would follow.
Mounted and hand-held video cameras caught the reaction of the crowd of 1,600.
He said it took officers about 45 minutes to clear the convention center of enraged audience members, as the two actors escaped.
Cage fighting is a no-holds-barred sport in which two combatants slug it out in a ring enclosed by a chain-link fence.
