The music was very street fighter-esque. Is there any special rules about grabbing the gi?

Yeah that song sounds like its straight out of guilty gear. The rule to gi grabbing are simple: you cant hold on to both sides of the body, only one side. So no thai clinch unless you’re only using one hand. I think they did this so that everything didn’t turn into a Judo jacket grabbing match.

Why don’t they punch in the face? Seems pretty impractical for a real fight, but at least they are going full contact.

The biggest problem with Karate is the fact that these black belt tests do seem a bit useful but a bit outdated. One trained in this manner does learn to keep his body hard but will be unprepared for the random nature that real confrontations might bring.
