Saying “he’s black” is not a big deal. But referring to them as a group as “blacks” is not considered very good. And, subtle though it may be, I can kinda see a difference between the two usages. And frankly, you don’t here “whites” much from official channels either. Usually, “black americans” or “white americans” is more accepted. And, personally, I find I am more comfortable using those phrases too.

I grew up in a mostly black neighborhood, and calling them African Americans usually just got a chuckle. Just call them black. No one really cares.
They do get mad when you say “you people”, I never got that. They also call pussy “cock”. Weird.
I work with some black guys and whenever I say “your people” he says “Them motherfuckers aint my people, my people from Arkansas”
