A MAN accused of murdering an 18-year-old delivered a martial arts-style kick to his head during a nightclub brawl, a court heard yesterday. Ryan Leigh Johns, 20, of Rowville, is charged with the murder of Aaron Linskens, 18, outside the Village Green Hotel in Glen Waverley on June 1 last year. The Melbourne Magistrates’ Court heard Mr Johns turned a full 360 degrees and kicked Mr Linskens’ head once.

Mr Linskens suffered fatal injuries and died in hospital days later. The court heard mayhem broke out in the carpark of the hotel after the bar closed at 2am. Witness Ronald Phease told the court Mr Linskens and two friends walked towards Mr Johns and appeared ready to start a fight. He said Mr Johns began backing away from the group before delivering the kick.

“Aaron was getting ready to strike . . . he (Johns) rotated and lifted one foot off the ground and connected,” he said. Mr Phease said he saw Mr Linskens grab at his mouth before falling backwards and hitting his head on the ground. Mr Johns was briefly detained by a security guard before running off, the court heard.

The preliminary hearing before Magistrate William O’Day was to continue today.

did he die from the kick or from hitting his head on the ground. that kick could easily kill.

I suppose when the cities medical examiner testifies in court, they will make their findings known.

I never did discover if that adulterous martial arts expert who was killed by his wife, died from the initial hit by her car or the doughnuts that followed. Ahh, the memories.

who’s that, the rich guy? the one that got the laps done on him?

Yep, the doctor. His wife confronted him with his mistress coming out of the hotel, upset she tried to hit him and through his martial arts skills knocked her aside. She then got into her mercedes and flattened him.

Funny thing was, judging from the video footage, he didn’t make a very effective speed bump.

Trial for martial arts death

April 04, 2003

A MELBOURNE man will face a Supreme Court jury on charges that he killed a youth with a kung-fu kick to the head during a pub brawl.

Ryan Leigh Johns, 20, of Rowville, is accused of delivering the martial arts-style “spin kick” outside the Village Green Hotel on June 1 last year. His alleged victim, Aaron Linskens, 18, was taken to nearby Monash Medical Centre and died from his injuries two days later. After a five day preliminary hearing in Melbourne Magistrates Court, Magistrate William O’Day ruled there was enough evidence to commit Johns to trial on charges of murder and of intentionally causing serious injury.

Johns has pleaded not guilty to both counts.

Witnesses told the hearing there had been no trouble among the 500 person crowd at a Glen Waverley hotel, but mayhem broke out as patrons left at 2am. The court was told Johns had retreated with his palms up in the air when confronted by Linskens and two others in the carpark. As Linskens prepared to strike him, Johns allegedly delivered the fatal kick to the right side of the jaw. Linskens grabbed at his mouth before falling back and hitting his head on the ground. A security officer grabbed Johns in a bearhug and passed him on to a colleague but he escaped their clutches, the court heard.

Later that night Johns told friends he had said he “wasn’t interested” in fighting but Linskens “kept coming at him”, the court heard. Johns was “very teary and really concerned and shaking” as he headed for the hospital to see what had happened to Linskens. “What am I going to do? I didn’t mean it,” Johns allegedly said.

Hotel barman Wayne Hood said the scene outside the pub was “the worst I’ve seen”, describing an incident where one patron was attacked by up to five people and then chased into a local supermarket where the bashing continued. Security officer Cameron Leiper said there were more than 10 fights outside the hotel. Mr Leiper helped get Mr Linskens, who “was making a noise like he was snoring”, into recovery position after he was felled. But as Mr Linskens became more coherent, he began swearing, shrugged off his helpers and was “quite determined to get back to the fight”, Mr Leiper told the court.

Johns remains in custody before a Supreme Court directions hearing on July 1 after Mr O’Day refused his application for bail.

Hey guys,

I’m from Melbourne, and yes this did make news here. It is real.

I was gonna’ post but didn’t get around to it. I’m not sure how this fits into Kungfools ‘TMA’s suck’ theory since this guy killed someone with a single kick but…

A few of the people I train with are cops, and I was discussing with them. They were saying the papers must be leaving something out of the story.

The paper mentions he was confronted by three people and spin kicked one of them. Generally being attacked by 3 people does not get you put up on a murder charge…

Make friends with them until they beg for mercy.

definately real, NO JOKE
im from melbourne and the pub where this happened is my local…
This guy left behind a lot of very teary friends and the incident had a big effect on everyone.
I heard he got kicked the shit out of, dunno bowt the 360 degree.

You mean the guy that died? If so, I sure wouldn’t shed any tears over that incident, he appeared to be a troublemaker. If you ask me, the stylist did humanity a favor by killing that punk.

Even so, I suppose even vermin has to have buddies that will miss him.

Not long after what would have been Aarons 21st birthday and quickly
aproaching the 3rd aniversery of his SENSELESS COLD BLODED MURDER! i
still have trouble coming to terms with how a mate could be KILLED so
EASILY, for NO REASON! I cant understand a world that would let such
a crime that hurt so many (Like the thousands of friends and family
that atended the 18 year olds funeral) be pardoned after only 3 1/2
years jail! Aarons family, friends and i will be grieving his loss
till the day we die! he was a GOOD MATE and didnt deserve to die!
Anyone who feels they have a right to take the life of another
person; someones son, grandson, boyfriend or mate, by any method be
it; hand gun, nife, martial arts etc, Should ROT IN JAIL.
The BASTARD who MURDERED Aaron new that he had been taught a LEATHAL sport and it was taught as a sport not a method for killing inocent people!!!

Aaron was not a trouble maker! despite the attempted smear campaign by the lawyers of the convicted crimanal who murdered him…

Assuming that you’re for real and that you’re not a troll, I should probably tell you that this killing was most likely accidental. If you want to kill someone, a 360 degree spinning kick is an extremely circuitous route to take. And I mean extremely. I’ll go out on a limb and say that death was probably the last thing the kicker wanted to inflict.

Aaron deserved to die.

I really hope someone managed to post some real details of the court precedings, briefs or something. I’ve heard so many rumours of this incident. When it happened folks were talking about the accused jumping on a car and screaming for the crowd to bring it on, that he had allready put a dojo buddy into hospital with that kick…all kinds of stuff. Whats crap and whats not?

All I seem to remember was that it was the impact with the kerb rather than the kick that did him in?

One charge of causing injury, one charge of murder. Do we know if he went down, and for which charge? And the sentence?

Bar brawl turned deadly.

Happens all the time. Some drunk guy feels empowered being backed up with some alcohol and friends and looks to kick ass. He gets punched in the face, falls down and hits his head and dies.

Bummer.

At worst its manslaughter. Definately not pre-meditated. And could be argued to be self-defense. Obviously the dude felt bad about it, and didn’t mean to kill him. But what the fuck was the option? Sit there and take your beating and HOPE that these 3 don’t do the same to you, possibly punching YOU and making YOU hit YOUR head, possibly killing you? Nah…fuck that…better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

Honestly I don’t give a shit. You mess with the bull and you get the horns. Sometimes you eat teh bear, and sometimes the bear eats you. Or someshit like that.

Yeah, from the few details in the article (backing away with hands up, other guy preparing to strike) it sounds like straightforward self defense.
Guess if the guy went down there must have been more to it, either that or the jury were overly impressed my the “OMG, t3h deadly MA skillz” angle.
Probably the fact it was a spinning kick that swung it. Seems like showing off, why not just punch the guy?

I might sound like i’m bullshitting here but I’m not so whatever, I don’t care if you believe me.
I have a friend who is a 2nd dan in tkd, hes like 18 and in the military.
He used to get into fights all the time.
Pretty much if you get good at the back hook kicks, they are VERY fast, and are pretty much a gauranteed knock out kick, especially (more like mainly) if you are up against some dumbass who doesn’t know what the hell you are doing.

Everyone knows that spinning kicks to the head hit very hard. The surprising thing is anyone actually being hit by one.
