[SIZE=4]The attached image is the cover of a 1989 Soviet publication for special police units and agents of direct action (assassination, kidnapping, etc.) Those could have been KGB and GRU, and certain MVD units. In general terms, the KGB everyone knows about – their intelligence agency. The GRU was their military intelligence organization, and the MVD was the internal paramilitary security organization.
The book was published by the Dynamo, which was a Soviet state-sponsored health and fitness organization. That was the public face. It was also a front for training special troops of the police, military, and other security services. It is a compilation of information from various personal combat, reconnaissance, and agent-related works, some of which go back to the Second World War (1945). Some illustrations reflect other periods and places. Several illustrations look like they were drawn to show local forces, such as Angolans or Nicaraguans, executing the actions. This would have been in keeping with period Soviet investment in those countries.
This book ended up being translated and published in the West, and it is available from Amazon. It is published as the KGB Alpha Team Training Manual, ISBN-13: 978-0873647069.
