1950s Soviet era border guard hand to hand manual (images)

The images are from a 1950s Soviet Union border guard troop training manual for unarmed combat. The techniques of prisoner handling reflect period equipment limitations and a carryover of previous training and doctrine from the Second World War. As the Soviet Union modernized, changes in training and doctrine occurred.

As a historical document, this perspective on the content is necessary. Helicopters, for example, were not widely available for prisoner transport from remote areas, as a result, some of the prisoner handling reflects behaviors show the limitations of the time. Today, things are different. The need for violent physical confrontation may be reduced because of stun guns, or other modern technical means, and helicopters and all terrain vehicles have changed how prisoners are transported out of difficult terrain.
