Poor lad - thoughts to out to his family, friends and gym
Shit. Unlucky, poor kid.
Fuck.
I hate it when this stuff happens.
The best of us are mowed down like wheat, doing what the rest of us have done many times without incident.
I wonder if it was a head shot, sub-clinical mono and a spleen burst, sub-clinical heart defect, or just a freak bleed out.
My sincere condolences for his family.
The article doesn’t give many details. Apparently there were no signs the fight needed to be stopped, but then something happened that was clear enough to the referee that he jumped in and caught him before he hit the canvas. Sad no matter the circumstances. Im sure his opponent is having a rough time of it as well.
Sorry WFMurphy, I meant to upvote your comment, but fat fingers hit down

No worries.
Probably a congenital heart defect. Shit kills lots of young athletes without warning.
Update on the thread - looks like it’s seen as a “tragic fluke”. Still a tragedy for his family, friends and club.

Man, that sucks. Interestingly, US lacrosse has just implemented new rules for the chest protection that goalies wear because of this exact same reason only when a lacrosse ball hits the chest. They had incidents of this happening even when they were wearing protection. So they changed up the pads.
Very sad!

yeah, those rock-hard rubber balls at 80+ mph from close range do some damage.
Never heard of someone killed that way. Tragic.

I remember hearing about freak deaths like this when I was a kid and we played the “open chest” game. Weird to think that you can get snuffed by a straight punch to the chest.

Yes, this is how my last boxing coach died.
