Wong Fei Hung

So, I know lots of movies were made about this guy. He practiced Hung Gar Kuen. He was a persona non grata before the chinese government for some reason during the 1800s, and he died in the beginning of the twentieth century, leaving a much younger wife (his last of a series).

There are lots of sites mentioning him, but this is what I think can be said without fear of going into serious bullshido territory.

Anyone knows some hard facts about this individual? His fights, his experiences in the political scenario of the time, etc?

And no, search shows no thread about the guy.

The following is a bad translation from a Chinese website, but hopefully offers some insight:

Before death quiet, after died actually enlarges the world stage by way of the special economy and the cultural caliber, from an ordinary Lingnan master of martial arts, to the cultural mark which was known very well by the common people, today, returns back the hometown Huang Feihong already no longer was more than 100 years ago that in the Foshan street corner 卖艺 entertainer, but was the village notables celebrities which the achievement had the world reputation, advanced into in the local significance extremely identical culture and the traditional symbol □□Foshan ancestral temple.

Here is another article about him:

http://www.kungfucinema.com/articles/2001-04-08-01.htm

I already saw that article. The part about his problems with the chinese government does sound a bit exaggerated, though.

The kid in ‘Iron Monkey’ is supposed to be an early wong fei hung.

We all KNOW about the movies. The question was about the history.

movies =/= real

What on earth would possess you to say such horrible things?

you mean that braveheart wasnt real … :frowning:

Fuck you aLL!!! IT WASN"T REALL GET OVER IT you wannabe NINJI muthafuckers…!!!

The worst movie I saw in my life was about Wong Fei Hung.

Now, does anyone here has some actual historical information?

Once upon a time in china was a great series.

I believe that he was one of the “ten tigers of Canton”, and is credited for developing the “no-shadow kick” ( fancy name for a front kick that is thrown when the opponent is distracted by hand movements/attacks).

some info I found:

WONG FEI-HUNG (1847-1924)

Wong Fei-Hung: The Movie Portrayals
If one was to mention the name Wong Fei-Hung, one of the first things that would come to mind is a martial arts master, who would help the poor, and beat up the bad guys. To many people, he is just a folk hero, a myth, a person that doesn’t exist except for movie purposes. Actors like Jet Li and many others have portrayed this martial arts master. Probably the one most famous for his portrayal of Wong Fei-Hung is Kwan Tak-Hing, who starred in more than 100 movies of him. Over 200 films in total have been made about Wong Fei-Hung.

If you were to watch some of the Once Upon a Time in China Series’ movies, one of the scenes you might recollect is Wong Fei-Hung fighting Master Yim in OUATIC 1, or perhaps beating up the helpless souls of the White Lotus Sect in OUATIC 2. Maybe another scene you could remember is the famous fight between two of Hong Kong’s greatest martial artists, Donnie Yen and Jet Li, where Wong Fei-Hung is matched against General Lan. Of course in reality, if Wong Fei-Hung actually did kill a regional commander of the Ch’ing Dynasty, he would have been hunted down and killed by the government. In the Once Upon a Time in China Series, it shows Wong Fei-Hung falling in love with his thirteenth aunt, (portrayed by Rosamund Kwan) and they plan to get married. The entire Once Upon a Time in ChinaSeries, while probably one of the best martial arts series ever made in Hong Kong, is very inaccurate and never did happen in history.

Wong Fei-Hung: The True Story
Wong Fei-Hung was born in 1847, and passed away in 1924. He was a martial arts master, teacher, healer, and revolutionary. He would protect and help those who were weak and defenseless. Wong Kay-Ying was his father, and he was a physician and great martial arts master also, and part of a group known as the “Ten Tigers of Kwantung,” and he and his son lived in the city of Canton.

Wong Kay-Ying’s famous medical clinic was Po Chi Lam, and Wong Fei-Hung was there assisting his father. He learned traditional Chinese medicine, and also learned many important values such as generosity and compassion. Wong Kay-Ying always treated a patient, even if he or she was a complete jerk or was poor. He would also secretly treat revolutionaries who were the resistance against the corrupt Ch’ing Dynasty.

The Ch’ing Dynasty consisted of Manchu emperors, who had conquered China from there home in Manchuria. They were foreign invaders to the southern Chinese. The southern Shaolin Temple in Fukien was a place where revolutionaries would go to train to fight against the Manchus. The temple was destroyed in 1734, but the few monks and students who escaped traveled throughout China to teach their skills. Some styles such as Wing Chun (Bruce Lee’s original style) and Hung Gar Kung Fu (Wong Fei-Hung’s style) emerged. The creator of Hung Gar was Hung Hei-Kwun (another martial arts master that was portrayed by Jet Li in New Legend of Shaolin). He was a Fukien tea merchant.

Wong Fei-Hung’s martial arts training began when he met with his father’s teacher, Luk Ah Choi. Luk Ah Choi taught Wong Fei-Hung the basics of Hung Gar. After, Wong Kay-Ying took over his son’s training. By his early 20’s, Wong Fei-Hung had made a name for himself as a dedicated physician and a martial arts prodigy. In addition to becoming a master of hung gar, he created the tiger-crane form and added fighting combinations now known as the “nine special fists.” Wong Fei-Hung was also skilled with many weapons, especially the long wooden staff and the southern tiger fork. One occasion where he utilised his skill with the staff was when he defeated a thirty-man gang on the docks of Canton. He also protected the weak and poor from both criminal gangs and government forces.

However, his life was not all great joy and triumphs. Wong Fei-Hung’s son, Wong Hawn-Sum, followed his father’s foot steps by protecting the weak and poor of Canton. Unfortunately, he was killed in the 1890’s after being gunned down by the drug gang Dai Fin Yee. After this tragedy, Wong Fei-Hung vowed never to teach his remaining 9 sons martial arts, unless they were targets themselves.

Also, Wong Fei-Hung’s first three wives died young, and after, decided to live the rest of his life alone. But in 1903, during an outdoor martial arts demonstration, he met a 16 year old girl named Mok Gwai Lan, and asked for her hand in marriage. She was also a skilled martial artist who taught all of the women’s classes, and even taught some of the men’s classes, which was rare since hardly any women mastered kung fu at the time. In 1924, Wong Fei-Hung died peacefully, a happy and humble man.

Wong Fei-Hung is truly a hero of China. A hero is somebody noted for feats of courage. A hero does righteous things not for money, not for any other venal motivations except, for the benefit of everybody else.

Hey, nice one Ronin!

Although this is quite hard to believe:

“One occasion where he utilised his skill with the staff was when he defeated a thirty-man gang on the docks of Canton.”

I always thought Canton was a province in China…I always thought this because thats where i’ve been told my great-grand-dad was from.

EDIT: http://www.travelchinaguide.com/cityguides/guangdong/

I am sure there is alot of BS in the “history” of many, if not all, MA “heroes”.
As for the “city of Canton”, beats me…

Here is another version:
Born To Be A Legend

Wong Fei Hung without a doubt is the most famous martial artist of all time. His life has been portrayed in over a hundred movies, by such actors/martial artists as Kwan Tak Hing, Jackie Chan and Jet Li. The real Wong Fei Hung was born in 1850 in Gwan Dong, Lam Hoi province, Sai Chu County, Luk Huern Yan village in China.

He was born into a legendary family (Wong Tai his grandfather and Wong Kay Ying his father). Young Wong Fei Hung began his training at age five and by the age of thirteen was already a very accomplished martial artist and traveled with his father demonstrating his skills. It is said that Wong’s skill in Ng Loong Bat Gwan Gwun was second to none. Wong Fei Hung was a great fighter even at a young age.
Wong Fei Hung is credited with formalizing the Hung style and developing the style’s most famous set “Fu Hok Sheung Ying Kuen” Tiger/Crane Fist Set. Wong used Tid Kiu Sam’s Horse and Bridge hands and combined it with his fighting skills. Using “Sup Juet Sao” (Ten Killing Hands), and “Gau Duk Kuen” (Nine Special Fists) to develop both the tiger/crane set and the two partner tiger/crane set or Doy Dar.
Wong Fei Hung was also famous for his Tiger Tail Kick and Shadowless Kick. It is believed Wong invented the “Mo Ying Gerk” or Shadowless Kick, but in fact he learnt it from a famous Martial Artist named Song Ton Fai. Master Song wanted to learn Wong’s Tid Sin Kuen (Iron Wire Set) so they traded skills.
Later Wong Fei Hung left Canton and moved to Fukien and became General Tong Gin Cheung’s right-hand man. Wong later moved back to Canton teaching Hung Gar and establishing his “Po Chi Lum” medicine shop. Wong Fei Hung produced many famous students over the years, such as Lian Foon, Ling Wan Gai, Chan Pin Biu, Lam Tsai Wing, Tang Fung, Sui Low Ngan, Sui Low Yuk, Tak Gan Jow and Luk Jin Gun.
During Wong’s lifetime he had married four times. Wong’s first wife’s surname was “Law”. She passed away from an illness, only three months after they were married. His second wife’s surname was “Ma” and bore Wong two sons - Hawn sum and Hawn Lum. She died soon after. Wong Fei Hung’s third wife also bore him two sons - Hawn Hei and Hawn Hsu. But his third wife also passed away not long after. By this time Wong was said to be bad luck for any woman he married. He stopped trying to remarry at this point, although later Wong was to marry for the fourth time to Mok Gwai Lan who did outlive him.
At the end of the Ching Dynasty and founding of the Republic in 1912, Wong Fei Hung became head instructor of martial arts for the special elite military unit under the direction of General Lau Wing Fuk in Canton city. In 1924 there was a strike against the government by all the businessess, Canton City fell and Wong’s home and herbal shop were burned to the ground. Wong lost everything, all his belongings and money.
Not long after, Wong Fei Hung’s son Wong Hawn Sum lost his life, shot dead by a drug gang. After all this Wong took ill and passed away in his home at the age of 83 in 1933. His fourth wife Mok Gwai Lan moved their sons to Hong Kong. She established a school there and produced many great students.
Although this is just a quick summary of Wong Fei Hung’s life, it displays his famous martial skills and touches on this truly great martial artists and man.

And a really silly story about the famous “shadow kick” or “shadowless kick” or whatever !!

Kick Like The Shadow of The Moon

There are many tales of Wong Fei Hung’s exploits. One of the most celebrated tells of his victory over prejudices.

One day a foreigner posted a notice to all Chinese, an open challenge that his vicious dog could defeat any Chinese man with ease! This dog was huge - the size of a tiger. At the time, foreigners labeled the Chinese as “The dog of the East”.
Therefore, if the dog defeated a Chinese man, he would be viewed as less than a dog.
Wong Fei Hung heard of this notice and took the challenge to defend the honor of his people. The dog was very vicious and had mauled many that had taken the challenge in the past.
Wong Fei Hung faced the dog knowing his race’s honor was at stake. The dog immediately jumped at Master Wong, the Master sidestepped and wrapped his left hand in a cloth, while positioning himself. It appeared as if he was retreating?
But master Wong was really setting the dog up for his famous Mo Ying Geuk (shadowless kick). Master Wong held his left hand over his head to tease the dog. The dog jumped at him once more. But this time the dog was met with a series of deadly blows that struck the dog’s groin and nose, killing it instantly. The crowd went wild as the dog fell heavily to the ground.
Kick Like The Shadow of The Moon is what it became known as in legend. This famous technique embodied and will always be enshrined in the famous set Fuhok Sheung Ying Kuen - The Tiger/Crane Double Fist Pattern.
Wong Fei Hung had proven that indeed he was of a proud race of people.
