Yeah in BJJ, especially under Brazillians they don’t get a lot of those simple safeguards.
When I ran the kids program at the local ATOS club I was essentially scoffed at for wanting to follow the Boy Scout Youth protection standards I grew up with. Like seriously, I don’t see adults and children needing to use the locker rooms and showers at the same time.

BJJ has no central governing body in control of BJJ in the USA, with a set of coaching ethics and standards in place, with some sort of ability to enforce rules.
Even that would not stop abuse, looking at what happened for example to Kayla Harris in Judo, and the gymnasts in USA Judo. There was some widespread abuse in Judo decades ago as well, but one of the prime instigators, although he resigned, was never prosecuted.

You might want to add in some sort of blurb about how combat sports that have national governing bodies do have Coaching Code of Ethics. Here is the general one from the USOC.
Obviously, even this sort of thing doesn’t stop abuse, but, there are at least clear code of ethics that coaches have to sign onto (literally) and receive official training in to be able to coach under the banner of the organization.

I was around at the national level as a member of the USA Judo BOD back when the USOC re-organized and modernized with a set of coaching ethics. The meeting where that first came out had quite a few squeals of dismay from people who were all “consenting adult” about the topic of sexual relations between teachers/coaches and students.
Same with having to come up with formal coaching performance standards.

I believe that’s because nobody wants to look at those numbers honestly. It makes too many people offended in every concievable camp. Our social conventions are meaningless & trivial compared to our biology.

Oh, they have a shared passion alright. I could tell you stories for days about what went on back in the day in the affiliation, but you’ve taught me that speaking out is a bad thing and its best to cover most of it up to avoid retaliation.
It’s not like Pence is joe blow either. He’s a likely target for all sorts of accusations.
