What’s wrong with a rifle that jams?
What’s wrong with a pen that runs dry?
What’s wrong with a knife that loses its sharpness after cutting a piece of paper?
What’s wrong with a condom that bursts open?
What’s wrong with decaff coffee?
What’s wrong with a woman with no vagina?
I love it. especially ashida kims special brand of asian riverdancing as seen in interview nr.2 in the movie section “bullshido”. Altso the gracious moves of aikido is appealing. Remember folks, its only gay if the balls touch!
To answer the original question, even if it is from a few years ago…
Nothing as long as it isn’t marketed as something else. Do the art part, rather than the martial. Surely it was kind of effective at one time, otherwise it wouldn’t have come into being in the first place.
Unless some forgon masters are sitting wherever they are having a good long laugh at everyone still studying.
Seriously though, everyone should do what they want, as long as they don’t complain if they’re in a shit art that says it can teach you to defend yourself, and they are left in hospital, close to death from trying something stupid that pissed their attacker off more.
Be worse if it was actually a doorstop painted like a guard dog to “scare people away”
Don’t ever wear an MA t shirt without skill, you never know who’s gonna feel like a challenge.
There’s nothing wrong with a pet rock, unless its owner thinks it will bite if a burglar breaks into the house.
thats pretty funny. Seriously though, it should be a serious offence to sell people crap. in fact it is. I just wonder why various courses be it self defence or whatever, does not fall under the category of sold goods. If someone sells you a bunk diswasher, you can have it replaced or your money back by law. Learning bunk contact sports is buying damaged goods IMHO as it DOES NOT do what it says on the tin, and it is from this angle McDojos should be attacked.
Because when you claim to teach a martial art you’re implicitly claiming ot teach people how to fight. When people are learning BJJ, even sport bjj, they are STILL LEARNING HOW TO FIGHT. The same is not true for a lot of tkd schools.
Has anyone compared this to shooting guns? A lot of people go to the range and practice shooting and think they’re pretty hot. But it would be the same if those said people never went through a combat exercise course. The stress is different and firing a gun with no pressure is different than having to make real-time decisions.
As for just practicing techniques, I don’t have a problem. Just as said above, don’t feel you are getting something out of it that you are not.
What’s wrong with a martial art being ineffective?
If it’s known to be ineffective, it’s not being trained for the purpose of fighting, whether for sport, for war, dueling, or whatever. Therefore it is not a martial art.
You don’t have to like that, but it’s fairly straightforward and does not leave much room for argument.
Guns have essentially made all martial arts ineffective. Most people train for either sport, excercise, or cultural reasons. Those few who train for actual combat use martial arts as an alternative to shooting someone.
Well, if one is training in a martial art that isn’t effective, why not just do calisthenics (jumping jacks, push-ups, leg raises, etc.) and play around with a jump rope for ten minutes afterwards instead? Instead of paying some goob $50-100 a month, you can get exercises online for free and make a rope with nylon clothesline from the dollar store and some clear plastic tape.
Well rivington, maybe some people don’t want to jump rope with their belt and some tape in their backyard? A gym can cost as much as a martial arts membership, and a gym with classes can cost much more.
There’s many reasons people go to class vs. work out alone. Motivation, proper instruction, social atmosphere… you can simply apply these to a not-so-effective martial art like Wushu and add in the fact you can learn some impressive flippy stuff.
