vinhthekid takes on the continental united states: or 2009, a bus odd-yssey

IF you make it to Eastern CT, I’ll put you up and take you to the Browning range and let you play with the kinds of guns you only read about in comic books.

Bus comes to New London, CT.

I can pick you up there.

That’s fine with me also Vinh. Looking forward to it.

Food snacks, water and toilet paper. (Beef jerky is good but relatively expensive). The water volume is especially crucial when you hit the Texas and more westerly leg of your journey. Also, if you don’t know, the desert gets cold at night.

Small Flash light and a lighter, pocket knife and maps for those states you’re traveling through (printed out is OK - you want an idea of where you are relative to where you want to be).

At least one change of clothes and a back pack or a ruck sack to carry all.

Go to the local Walgreens or such and buy travel size tooth brush, tooth paste, deodorant, etc. A wide marker for making signs on cardboard can help. Make the lettering BIG so people can see what you’re saying if you’re on a corner or at the entry to a highway.

Look clean and don’t stink. You don’t want to be picked up and dropped off at the next exit.

Have a good demeanor when you’re standing there with your thumb up. You may want to wear a hat/cap, but be sure to let people see your face. Sunglasses are your friend, but you should raise them when a possible ride is coming and when/if people stop to pick you up. People want to see a stranger’s eyes.

Try to get dropped off at places that will be good for your next leg, not necessarily the furthest mile in your journey.

A lot of truck drivers aren’t allowed to pick up hitch hikers anymore due to company policy and insurance rules. Still, many will and it’s a good way to get a long distance out of one ride. I made Barstow, CA to OKC once in a little over 2 days when in the USMC on leave.

Be safe and good luck.

For those areas you don’t make a connection in,
try finding a hostel. Hostels are pretty much made
for hitching & backpacking travelers, and they save
tons of money. . .here are some links to book ahead:

Good luck, bro!

i’m safe and sound, going across the united states and am having a great time.

if you want to follow my journey, www.vinh-hua.com.

can’t wait to see diesel in florida.

Sent you a PM with my number on there. Do you know when you are coming in?

I wish I would have seen this earlier,

if you come to Detroit, I’ll put you up, feed you, and take you to the gym and stuff.

So, Vin came by last weekend. You can read about it on his Blog. Anyways, he was a real cool guy. We rolled almost as soon as he got here. He has a wicked sweep game. It was lots of fun.

We watched the UFC fight, pissed. And went to the beach on Sunday for the whole day. I took him kyaking and we saw some sting rays out in the gulf. My party days are past, so we didn’t do any of that. Plus he was allergic to Pensacola. So he couldn’t breathe the whole time. It was cool to have him though.

That is what I love about bullshido, you actually get the opportunity to get together and roll with people from all over the world. There is no better place than this one!

Man, if I wasn’t working, I would have come by. Maybe next time.

diesel was awesome.

him and his family were some of the most generous, kind and generally hospitable people i have ever had the pleasure to meet.

admittedly, my allergies acted up, but i had an absolutely amazing time in pensacola and it definitely strengthened my faith in both bullshido and in people in general.

now off to austin.

Glad you’re safe and having fun, bro!
