Had about 12 people, not including spectators and girlfriends/wives. Most everyone showed up around 11am. A little bit of talking and such.
Looked like there was a little technique work shown, then probably 20-30 minutes of grappling and 30-45minutes of standup. Some mixed bag in there too. Varying skill levels from okay to very good. No bullshit challenges, etc.
Dude, that foot lock you were doing I tend to do it with a roll through rather than a passing technique. Try it, it’s cool and get’s a lot of eeewwws and aaaaahs and I found it to be more successful because of the unorthodox approach.
I was giving a private lesson to one of our whitebelts.
Honestly I am pretty new to the forum and wasn’t real familiar with the protocol of these throwdowns. Just jumping in there didn’t seem like that great an idea considering I don’t want to spend $20 to train at my own gym. Hehe. I would rather make the $20 in that time. On top of the awkwardness of me being behind on my gym dues almost 2 months - it was just kinda strange. One of our whitebelts wanted a lesson and I’m such a nice guy that I obliged. I did try to keep one eye open on you guys though. My eyes are bad though so I missed a lot of stuff.
The footlock you were talking about us practicing? IMHO it’s weak. We were practicing some bicep slicer sub/sweep moves and I had talked about the calf slicer. He’s pretty new to the leglocks and wanted to practice the one we had learned before to put the concept of bicep slicer together with calf slicer. Its definately not my favorite, as you lose position, but we add the toehold to the calf slicer for effect. But again, IMHO its weak - I don’t like to give up position to go for a submission. Keep in mind the guy I was teaching is a whitebelt - learning the inverted calf slicing toe hold from the half guard probably isn’t going to do him much good. Especially since he has trouble passing the half guard. LOL. It was more of a concept thing for him.
Oh yeah.
I have to apologize for my instructor trying to hawk his gear on you guys. He is brazilian and tries to make a fucking dollar on everyone. He saw that there were 15 people and he sees dollar signs. Again, sorry to anyone who felt obligated to buy any of that gear. He doesn’t understand the concept of high pressure sales and the negative effects yet.
Like I said, the weirdness came from me being almost 2 months behind in dues and (mistakenly) thinking I had to pay $20 for a mat fee… to my own gym… and that would have meant that I skip the private. Which is how I kinda negotiate some of the dues and get away with being late. Bringing up how poor I really am is sorta embarassing, and not something I wanted to do in front of a crowd.
