Ex-sumo wrestler nabbed over group muggings
KAWASAKI – A former sumo wrestler and three others who ganged up on victims, attacking and robbing them, have been arrested, police said.
Sho Sakuma, 21, a former wrestler in the jonidan division, the second lowest in sumo, was arrested with three other suspects aged between 20 and 21 on suspicion of robbing and inflicting injury.
Investigators said Sakuma hit victims and held their arms behind their heads, while the others stole their wallets.
In the specific case over which they were arrested, police said the four approached a 42-year-old man from behind in a street in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, at about 4 a.m. on Aug. 18, and attacked him, stealing a bag from him containing about 6,000 yen in cash.
Sakuma was about 178 centimeters tall and weighed about 90 kilograms, police said. In the past, he had entered a sumo stable to train as a wrestler, but he gave up after one year.
“I went for passersby because I wanted money for entertainment,” police quoted him as saying.
Police suspect that the four arrested men teamed up with two others and attacked at least seven other men between Aug. 5 and 18 using similar tactics. They are suspected of stealing a total of about 120,000 yen from the victims. (Mainichi)
