throwdon legal question

for any price, reward or
compensation, directly or indirectly

and, of course, this woudl be in MD or VA, making that CA law irrelevent.

Most states have laws that prohibit prizefighting without the proper licensure. That is the jist of this statute.

A throwdown is not the same, the purpose behind the law is to prevent people from doing their own backyard fighting matches, with wagers and prize money.

There might be a local ordinance that prohibits “free sparring in a public park”. Unless it gets out of hand there shouldn’t be a problem.

We have a 1st amendment right to assemble. No money or any other “consideration” is being passed, other than martial knowledge.

The purpose is the furtherance of an art form.

I would argue that they are not “fights”

There is no prize for being better
There is no conflict born out of anger

How is it a fight?

Also, your dojo is a private place, not “public”.

I wouldn’t worry about the police or the laws as long as it’s obvious that you’re TRAINING as opposed to having a fight club of some sort. The worst that can happen is you’ll be asked to leave.

My Studio is in maryland i can see what is up we are like 15 minutes from DC

The Adelaide Mini-Throwdown will be in a park. I’ve trained there before with a club, and there were no problems besides some hecklers.

However, from what I understand in Singapore you can be arrested for sparring in public. Keep in mind that Singapore is what I think people call a police state.

I think that if you somehow marked off some “turf” and maybe had something pseudo-official-looking, like a sign, water cooler, whatever, that people would get the idea that you guys were just having some friendly matches. Throw on some gloves, and you should be ok.

The biggest problem, I would think, would be attracting “unsavory” characters. The last thing you need is some punk showing up and escalating the throwdown from friendly sparring and technique exchanges to actual fights.

any1 not from Dc dont underestimate the security the cops there yell at u for anything but ya mabey put like soem caution tape or something around the area and deffinantly wear gis and gloves.

Man, gis get grass stains easy. :frowning:

definately not in DC. Over in the maryland and virginia side it should be so bad.
