The Meteors often use electric bass even in the early days with Nigel Lewis on vocals so saying something isnt Psychobilly because theres no upright bass is bullshit
“Wrecking crew” probably one of the most infamous psychobilly songs with electric bass… only the meteors are pure psychobilly, they created the entire thing and no band even comes close to them. EVER!
Who’s saying something isn’t psychobilly if there’s no upright bass? Read the entire 3 page thread, (OMG that’s too much reading) don’t just pick and choose what you want to disagree with out of context.
I said the upright bass was/is a “trademark” /association of the psychobilly genre, I’m not sure who you’re arguing with or if you’re arguing at all but if it’s me you’re mixed or something. I also never declared- something isn’t psychobilly if it dosen’t have an upright bass- and I don’t think anyone else did either, so relax no need to call bullshit.
I stated that Misfits “American Nightmare” was a psychobilly sounding song that dosen’t use an upright bass, created by a band that is not considered (by most) to be a psychobilly band. This was meant to be an example of the gray area of the genre that many bands(including The Cramps) have dabbled in without attaching the psychobilly genre label to the band.
I even gave the Meantraitors as an example of a band who’s considered psychobilly by many sources but dosen’t demonstrate the majority of the characteristics associated with psychobilly bands. As I said psychobilly is a subculture defined mainly by fans which leaves a lot of room for interpretation.
One sure fire way to determine a pschobilly band is : upright bass+macabre lyrics+1950s rockabilly style guitar=psychobilly. Yes, other formulas may apply but the upright bass is synonymous with the psychobilly genre, don’t argue shut the fuck up!
Also worth a mention are Batmobile, Demented are go, Long tall texans, Coffin Nails, the Hangmen, Frenzy, Skitzo.Just remember though O.T.M.A.P.P[/quote]
Although a few of these bands have already been mentioned; nice list! Demented are go is probably the best psychobilly band ever.
pretty much after posting that i see i read it wrong but oh well… Also dont agree that stand up bass is a trademark for Psychobilly at all considering lots of bands in the 80s used electric bass (Including the Meteors who created the entire genre) and as for Demented are go been better than the Meteors, well im pretty sure your on crack or something
I see them both earlier this year in May the Meteors on the friday and DAG on the saturday, The Meteors blow any band out of the water seeing them live was something else ill never forget no band even comes close.
Any way
Fenech is king
The Meteors are the only 110% pure psychobilly band
Everything else is at best a support act
